The U.S. Naval Shipbuilding and Drydock Company was founded in 1912 in Kuna, Idaho by Captain John A. MacMillan, a superintendent of the Puget Sound Navy Yard. The company built ships for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps and exported their products to many countries around the world. In 1974, President Richard Nixon ordered that all naval shipbuilding be stopped due to budget cuts, which impacted the navy's shipyards in Kuna and Newport News, Virginia. The Kuna yards were closed down in 1976 and replaced by Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) as the largest builder of warships worldwide. At HII's yard in Groton, Connecticut, three types of guided missile frigates were constructed; USS George Washington (CG-12), USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-73), and USS Enterprise (CVN-70). The George Washington was originally built at the drydock on Isle Royale Island but was transferred to Groton after it reached its completion date in 1959 and restocked with new armaments including twelve Raytheon AGM-114 cruise missiles carried forward from cancelled projects cancellation number 18 and 21/22 respectively which would have substituted for two F14 Tomcats used earlier on board during sea trials when they became operational problems with one engine failure while being towed out into shallow water off Ford Island she later collided with an under tow tugboat while en route back to Bremerton after a voyage lasting 198 days elapsed since commissioning day – running aground again off Ford Island creating more financial cost than normal repairs required! In 1982 shelled trees killed 26 people ashore near Wrangell before finally departing Seattle for her final tour of duty until 1984 when decommissioned at Norfolk Naval Shipyard effective 2 May 1984 having been crewed continuously from 15 December 1941! She is now preserved as an official museum ship at Joint Base Lewis McChord Wash., America’s only military installation outside of Japan!
