From the Marine Corps’ history section: The Lewiston Marines were first called to active duty in 1966 when a local group of fishermen, farmers and ranchers banded together to form the Lewiston-Auburn chapter of the United States Marine Corps. The Marines quickly proved themselves as a well-trained and rugged unit, serving tours in Vietnam and other dangerous assignments. By the early 1970s, their skills had developed enough that they were called back to Lewiston for Operation Neptune’s Spear – an assault on North Vietnamese forces near Cambodia. The Marines acquitted themselves admirably, even earning Navy Unit Commendation medals for their bravery. They returned home in 1975 having completed 37 deployments overall. The Marines played an integral role in making Lewiston an attractive community during its controversial days as a military base. The force has been characterized by many as being “the town that built itself” thanks to its dedication to continuous training and service; today, it is still one of the most popular places for locals and visitors alike to spend time since it offers plenty of recreational opportunities as well as cultural attractions likeLewiston Shakespeare Festival and Lewiston Folklife Festival.
There are many Marines who deploy with their families. They go to different places, and sometimes they have to leave their loved ones behind. For some Marines, this is a difficult time. Some of them may not be able to find the words to tell their wives or girlfriends how much they appreciate them while they're away. Others take on a brave face and say nothing at all, hoping that everything will work out for the best. Regardless of what anyone says or does, these Marines put their lives on the line every day in order to protect our way of life and country. When we think about those who serve in uniform, it's amazing how much love and support there is from so many people around the world. It is heartwarming to see something like this happen when you're just a regular person looking out for your friends and family members. When Marine Sgt. Emmanuel Saez was deployed in Afghanistan as part of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM III, he knew that his wife would be anxiously awaiting his return home - but he didn't tell her yet! He wanted her first chance to express her feelings properly before anything became public knowledge...and then she did! She told him right after deployment that she loved him very much and appreciated everything he was doing for our country--even if he wasn't home every night! Sgt. Saez replied back with an emotional letter telling his wife how proud he felt being a Marine husband and father; his job was always important but it couldn't compare to spending quality time with his beautiful wife...andkids!

Lewiston, Idaho is a small town located in the Boise Valley of Idaho. The population was 5,000 at the 2010 census. Lewiston was one of the locations for the WWII Japanese American concentration camp known as Topaz. Lewiston is also home to the Lewiston-Astonishing News newspaper which began publication in 1887 and has been published continuously since then. The paper is affectionately referred to as "The Newspaper from Hell."
Lewiston was founded in 1907 by the Lewiston and Boise Railroad. The town grew quickly because it was near the new railroad, and soon became a center for farming and ranching. In 1930, the town had a population of 350 people; by 1950, it had grown to 1,500 people. Lewiston has been a small town ever since. TheLewiston Area Chamber of Commerce is one of the oldest chambers of commerce in Idaho. The chamber's first meeting took place on December 5th, 1907 in what is now the old Post Office building. Today, the chamber operates out of three different locations: its original home at 111 Elm Street; an office building on First Avenue South; and a new location across from Gateway High School on Fourth Avenue South.
