When the Meridian, Idaho area was first settled in the late 1800s many people chose to enlist in the military. The local militia was able to provide some protection for settlers and their herds of livestock during times of war or natural disasters. The first Army unit to Station in Meridian was a company of cavalry from California. This unit served until 1883 when it moved east and joined the 3rd Infantry Cavalry Regiment. The regiment remained inactive until 1907 when it was reactivated and stationed at Fort Boise, ID. It served as an infantry brigade under army General John Pershing until World War I ended. After the war, the regiment returned to garrison duty at Fort Boise before being disbanded in 1924. In 1933, a group of local businessmen formed what is known as “The Citadel Group” which purchased land around Fort Boise and began construction on what would become known as “The Citadel” military base. The goal of this group was to provide training ground for American servicemen and women in preparation for World War II. In 1946, after years of planning and construction, The Citadel opened its doors to troops and civilians alike as “Fort Boise National Guard Armory”. Today, “The Citadel” remains one of the most popular Military installations within Meridian boundaries with its storied history dating back centuries!

In 1946, the battalion was redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Company of the 5th Infantry Division. In 1961, it became part of III Corps. In 1969, it became a reserve unit and was disbanded on October 1, 1971.
