The Moscow, Idaho Air Force Base is home to the 1st Wing of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) and is one of the world's largest airfields. It has been a hub for military activity in central Idaho since World War II and today it houses more than 12,000 active duty members and their families. The base also hosts an air traffic control system that allows NATO planes to fly over Russia without being intercepted. The AFB was founded on August 15, 1942 as Andersen Air Force Base by Majors Irving L. Andersen, Jr., Lt Colonnade Ewing Krantz and Capt Norman Wohlgemuth after the Battle of Midway when Japanese aircraft were destroyed or forced to land too far from American forces. It was later renamed for General Curtis LeMay after his victory against Japan at Midway in 1941. In 1945, when the war ended, Andersen AFB became Soviet Union air force territory under control ofthe Soviet Union's Soviet Central Command which placed it within the newly created Third Army under United States General Dwight Eisenhower which included Russian-held Alaska and parts of Siberia. In 1957-1959 USAF personnel constructed an airport on Iwo Jima Island as part of Operation Northwoods which was conducted as a prelude to full US involvement in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. The airport served as a staging area for USAF bombers entering South Vietnam while also providing facilities for fighter/ bomber operations out of Clark AB adjacent to Iwo Jima Island until its closure in 1969 due to budget cuts by then President Richard Nixon following revelations about My Lai Massacre at San Francisco AB near Saigon where American soldiers had killed Viet Cong prisoners resulting in public outrage across America Airport improvements were first proposed at Moscow AFB in 1978 with plans calls for the installation of two parallel runways capable of handling large jets although these plans never came into fruition In 1990 construction began on what would become known as "Hawks" Bay - a new hangar complex that would include four single-engine airstrips capable of handling both jet fighters and cargo planes On October 6th, 1997 serial bomber UA 747 flying from Amsterdam crashed into Yelena Behrouzova Airport killing all 269 passengers and 14 crew members . This event made Yelena Behrouzova Airport one of the most infamous airports worldwide . On November 7th another Boeing 777 flying from Bangkok crashed into Pushkin Yaroslavsky Airport killing all 298 passengers & 11 crew members making it oneofthe deadliest commercial disasters ever booked on mainline airlines

The population of Moscow decreased during World War II as most of the manufacturing businesses closed down, but has since recommenced growing again. The city is also home to Eastern Washington University and Moscow State University. Moscow's history can be traced back to 1881 when Mormon pioneers arrived in the Snake River Valley looking for new land to settle. They named their community Moscow after St. Petersburg, Russia, where they had been baptized some years earlier. Initial development took place around a Mormon church headquarters called The House on Meridian Street which served as the town's first library and post office. However, due to lack of resources and competition from other towns in southern Idaho, Moscow only attained a modest level of prosperity until World War II: its population declined from over 10,000 in 1941 to just under 6,000 by 1945. Since then however, growth has resumed with various businesses opening up including a water filtration plant (1991), an auto parts store (1998), and now a food processing company (2006). In addition to these recent successes there have also been several significant renovations or expansions such as the construction of new schools (2001-2002), an art museum (2005-2007), and a new basketball arena that opened in 2009. Overall, whileMoscow still lacks many of the same amenities enjoyed by larger urban centers such as Los Angeles or New York City it nevertheless continues to grow rapidly becoming one of southeastern Idaho's fastest-growing communities.
