Mountain Home, ID is home to a rich and diverse marine history. The town was founded in 1907 by J.D. Kirtland and his family as a logging town on the edge of what is now Boise County. Over time, the name changed to Mountain Home after Kirtland's father, who had died in office at the height of the Gold Rush in 1858. The first shop in Mountain Home was a grocery store called "The Grapes" which opened its doors on Main Street in 1907. In 1911, Kirtland built and operated the first oil refinery east of the Rockies on Eight Mile Creek. The local papers called it "the most important development here since the turn of the century." In 1923, Mountain Home became an incorporated city with its own mayor and council members but continued to rely on state funding for most of its operations. That all changed when Idaho passed its first statewide Marine Mammal Protection Act in 1929. At that point, everything from fishing to tourism started to take off due to growing awareness ofangered species off our coastlines. In 1941, during World War II, Mountain Home became one of only two towns within ten miles of Naval Base Pearl Harbor (now known as Hickam Air Force Base) where residents were allowed to keep pet dolphins and other sea creatures for their entertainment purposes..During those years there was also a significant naval presence here with many servicemen living and working right near town limits - including future Mayor Stacey Youngblood! In 1951 City Council approved plans to establish a Park Department which would eventually become Boise State University's School Of Fisheries/Marine Science! On July 1st 1966 Mount Bachelor National Monument was created comprising much of present-day Mountainhome along with parts of Garden Valley and Snake River valleys! With this new designation came an increased demand for goods produced or gathered within reach of Vernor High School students!
