Mountain Home is a small town located in the Salmon Arm Mountains of south-central Idaho. The community was founded in 1907 on the site of an old military post. The post was named for General George Armstrong Custer, who was killed in 1876 during the Indian Wars. The first post in Mountain Home was built by the United States Army and garrisoned by soldiers from Boise, Idaho. In 1912, a new commandant’s barracks and store were erected on the site of present day Post #2. In 1916, a group of men from Mountain Home formed the Alpine Volunteer Cavalry Regiment to provide cavalry service to local ranchers. This regiment served until 1919. In 1927, Post #1 (now Post Office) was moved to its current location on Main Street across from School District No 1 headquarters building. In 1937, a new school house and gymnasium were built on Main Street between Post Office and First Baptist Church. These buildings remain standing today and are used as storage space for Mountain Home Schools. In 1941, World War II began with Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor and America’s entry into World War II. By early 1945, the United States had mobilized over 100 thousand troops within Oregon, Washington Territory (Alaska), Nevada and Arizona Counties across three states: Oregon (17th Infantry Regiment), Washington Territory (8th Infantry Regiment), and Nevada (4th Armored Cavalry Battalion). On 8 October 1944 at 0300 hours Mountain Home residents heard sounds coming from their townsite which they believed might be Japanese bombers flying overhead looking for targets! They immediately started firing warning shots into the air as they knew there would be no response if they fired upon our own planes! As it turned out these reports may have been false alarms caused by aircraft departing too high or too quickly – but one thing did happen that night- our townspeople demonstrated their patriotism by continuing to fire warning shots until all evidence disappeared!

Today, it remains an important agricultural center with several thousand residents who engage in various roles within local government and industry. Mountain Home, Idaho is a small town located in the central portion of the state of Idaho. The population was 596 at the 2010 census. Mountain Home is one of two towns in Idaho that are considered to be "ghost towns." The other is Lewiston. The first inhabitants of Mountain Home were Native Americans who lived there prior to European arrival in what is now Idaho. It was officially incorporated as a town on November 1, 1907. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has an area of , all of it land. In 1960, when Interstate 80 was built across the state line from Mountain Home, its routing created a transportation problem for the community which spanned several miles along both sides of I-80. Residents voted to make their own road and named it Old Main Avenue after their local high school mascot - "Old Main" being short for "Old Mine Road". In 1990, when I-80 was rerouted eastward through Boise into surrounding states and MountainHome lost its status as a ghost town, it regained its former name on October 1st - becoming known as Lewiston again after more than 60 years since its incorporation into what would become Boise County. As part ofnings efforts bythe US Forest Service to reduce logging operations within Coeur d'Alene National Forest during the late 1800s and early 1900s (and also because much lumbering took place near Lewiston), many sawmills and woodworking stores closed down in this period as well; however, some remain operational today primarily due to customers who continue visiting old mill buildings or taking tours inside them for historical purposes only (most notably Humble’s Saw Mill Museum). After decades of decline, production at most mills stopped completely between 1972-1977 because seed prices had plummeted due à Timber Wars II; however sporadic timber cutting still occurs around notable sawmills such as Humble’s which have been preserved with historic features (e.g., restored original gears). Recently new archaeological excavations have taken place at four abandoned mills including Humble’s which provide insight into how these factories functioned over time while also revealing evidence about cultural resources used by natives during this time period; see: http://www2.idahoohaislandgov dot com/~nmc1/mill excavation reports/. This activity has helped revive interest among historians in these defunct mills and has led to restoration projects underway at three remaining sawmills viz.: Humble’s Mills Museum (opened in fall 2018), Centennial Sawmill & Lumber Company (opened spring 2019) and King Ranch Sawmill & Lumber Company (opened summer 2019)
Mountain Home began as a small mining town in 1887, when the first gold was found in the area. The town grew quickly and soon had a population of over 1,500 people. In 1907, Mountain Home became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and council. The community continued to grow and by 1916 it had reached its current size of over 20,000 people. In 1951, Mountain Home became an independent city with a Mayor/Council system. In 1961, the city annexed the neighboring town of North Idaho for economic reasons.
