The name "Twin Falls" comes from two factors: one was Joséphine du Halde's discovery of waterfalls on the Missouri River in 1821 and another was the presence of falls on both sides of the river near present-day Twin Falls. During World War II, when thousands of soldiers were stationed in or near Twin Falls to help with war production, many stores and businesses closed as troops requisitioned goods. In 1951, Congress passed an act authorizing dam construction downstream on the Missouri River for irrigation purposes; this led to development throughout twin falls valley including new shopping centers and housing developments such as Summit Place and Williamson Village. In 1987, a referendum resulted in passage by then-Governor John Kitzhaber (D) of a bill creating the city of Twin Falls within Butte County; twin falls has since grown rapidly becoming one of America’s fastest growing cities with over 1 million residents now living there. The Twin Falls area was first settled by the Shoshone people in the early 1800s. The area became a part of the United States when it was admitted to the Union in 1889. The community developed rapidly after gold was discovered in nearby Idaho Springs, and miners arrived from all over the country to find their fortune. In 1916, Twin Falls became a town and began to grow due to its many businesses and services. The population increased so quickly thatDouglas County was created to accommodate them. Today, Twin Falls is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Idaho, and its economy is based largely on tourism and other outdoor activities.
The discovery of oil in Twin Falls, Idaho, in 1901 initiated a boom in the area. The first wells were drilled by Standard Oil Company and others in 1902. By 1910, there were over 20 wells drilled in Twin Falls County. In 1916, the Twin Falls Independent School District was organized and began to serve the town of Twin Falls as well as parts of Price County. In 1922, the first high school was built in Twin Falls, and it served students from Price and White Counties. In 1926, a dam was constructed to improve water supplies for the town of Twin Falls and other nearby communities. In 1927, a coal mine opened in Twinsburg Township and produced coal for local power plants until 1975 when it closed down due to environmental concerns. In 1929, an important road junction was established between Boise City and Price County; this became known as "The Link".
