Twin Falls is a town in interior Idaho, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Twin Falls–Idaho City metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Twin Falls was Jerald Fenton in 1907. He and his wife, Lillian (née McNaught), founded the city on the east bank of the Snake River. Early residents were Mennonites who had come to Idaho from Germany in 1879. In 1896, entrepreneur Olaus Snyders constructed a mill on the confluence of the North Fork and South Fork Snake Rivers, which became an important center for irrigation and other economic activities during the early 20th century. In 1910, Snyders donated land south of town to establish Twin Falls County Park, which remains today one of America's most popular tourist destinations. Olaus Snyders also donated funds for construction of twin dams on both forks of the Snake River – dam No 1 now forms Lake Pendleton while dam No 2 creates reservoirs that provide water for local farms and mills as well as electricity for Twin Falls homes and businesses. The two dams formed what would later be called "the Fish Dam Rd." corridor that bisects Twin Falls today. The townsite was platted in 1912 by John Waddell and William Kapp with approval from then-governor David Boren. The name "Twin Falls" originated from General George Armstrong Custer's battle near this location three years earlier when he led elements northwestward across Steamer Creek into British Columbia during his campaign against Tecumseh Sherman's Union army under Ulysses S Grant
