On 1 July 1952, Arlington Heights became an armory and headquarters unit within The United States Army Forces Europe under command of Major General Leroy S. Casey. Arlington Heights, IL is an affluent community located in the Chicago metropolitan area. The population was 107,673 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Cook County district that includes Chicago. The community takes its name from Arlington Park, a large park located in Englewood Township, about 8 miles east of downtown Chicago. The first settlers in what is now Arlington Heights were Yankees and Irish immigrants who arrived during the American Revolution. They developed a small agricultural village which they named after General George Washington's home town of Alexandria on Long Island, Virginia. In 1892, Arlington Heights became a city and was renamed to honor then President George Washington's father-in-law John Quincy Adams (1767–1849). In 1924, it was annexed by the new municipality of Cicero, Illinois. The City of Arlington Heights has always been a bastion of high-quality education and economic growth for Chicagoland residents because it offers excellent public schools with top notch curriculums and competitive prices for private schools within walking distance or less than one mile away from most homes in the community.
