Bensenville is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 6,904 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Bensenville is located on the west side of Chicago, bordered by Calumet City to the north and west, Maywood to the south and east, and Southfield to the southeast. Bensenville has a long history as an agricultural market town that grew up around two cotton plantations operated by Judge James A. Bensen and his son-in-law Samuel Latham: Ansonia Plantation in 1834 and Jardine Plantation in 1845. The townsite was laid out in 1795 by Nicholas Cordonius for Amos Dickson (1767–1838), one of several early investors who came to buy land around Chicago from Native Americans during its earliest years as a European settlement. During the 1830s, when southern Illinois was still part of Kentucky, Judge Bensen managed some 625 acres (249 hectares) of land near what are now Racine Avenue and Wabash Avenue in what is now Bensenville; this farm became known as Ansonia Plantation after Judge Bensen's daughter Anna married Johnathan Anson (1696–1775). In 1836 Ansonia became one of three plantations—along with Miami Prairie on Lake Michigan just east of downtownChicago and Hermitage plantation outside Decatur—owned by James A. Bensen III following his purchase of an adjacent 120-acre (49-hectare) piece of property from Daniel Boone (1727–1815). That same year James A. Bensons' father died leaving six children under age 10: James Jr., Anna (who married Jonathan Atwater), Alpheus (-later Alcibiades,- later Alcibiades V), Lemuel (-later Englishman Israel Putnam)), Marilla (-married Isaac Stiles TD)),and Sarah Ann.( wifeof John Prentiss)). Anna designated her father's estate "Jardine" for use as her birthright according to state law at about this time but it reverted back to "Ansonia" after she married Charles Muhlenberg.(Muhlenberg had been living with his family at Dutch Reformed Church on Dearborn Street since 1799.) In 1845 Samuel Latham purchased Jardinesfrom Judgeship through marriage which made him owner of both plants plus additional acreage which he divided among his four daughters; Alpheus received Ansonia while Lemuel received Jardine(the latter becoming known simply as "Lemuel"). From then until 1850 Alpheus ran Ansonia while Lemuel ran Jardine; after that date their operations were combined into one single business venture under the name "Ansonia Cotton Mills Company". The mills produced finished goods such as clothing for whites only starting about 1830 until white supremacy ended Reconstruction in 1865; thereafter black workmen began working there beginning about 1870 . Manufacturing stopped completely during World War II due to wartime shortages caused by rationing . Nowadays only a few remaining buildings remain including those used for storage during peak production times The site today includes a recreation area featuring gardens, ponds, playgrounds, picnic areas,.a distillery tour complete with tasting room/cereal shop/cocktail lounge & restaurant - all open daily 9am-10pm -& free admission throughout winter months! In addition there are over 40 historical Buildings on 2 lots which can be toured including Jailhouses 1st District & 5th Ward courthouse built c1800 & National Register House also dating 1800/.
