When World War II began American troops landed at Normandy beaches on June 6th 1944 and soon afterward invaded northern France; thus starting World War II which ended with Victory over Japan on September 2nd 1945 (the date legal documents called 'V-J Day'). More than 58 million Americans served during World War II including more than 27 thousand soldiers from Illinois Bellefontaine Township lost its post office when Amtrak disconnected it from Chicagoland Railroad Network services effective October 1st 1984 because switchyard space would have been needed for new Amtrak trains serving St Louis Airport instead which opened that fall without those passenger trains terminating at Bellefontaine station continuing onto Chicago State Street where passengers disembarked for their return trip home
