Berwyn, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. It is located on the border of Cook and DuPage Counties. As of the 2010 census, the population was 12,591. The name Berwyn comes from two sources: one account suggests it derives from "Beryllium," meaning "bright blue" or "sky blue," and another suggests that it is derived from the Welsh word for Bethlehem (bwrw). The first settlement in what is now Berwyn was made up of families who had come overland from Pennsylvania during the mid-19th century. By 1859, there were approximately 50 residents living in three homes built on land donated by John Witherspoon. In 1870, J. P. Moroney arrived in Berwyn with his family and started a grocery store which became an important part of community life until he passed away in 1924. During World War II, much of the village was destroyed by bombing raids but fortunately no civilians were killed or affected. After the war ended, many buildings were restored and opened to the public as art museums or tourist attractions such as The Morone Museum of Art (now part of University Park) and The Butler House Museum (now known as The Butler School). Berwyn has experienced some significant growth since its incorporation as a town in 1959; most notably through annexation by neighboring Aurora Township which occurred in 1990. This led to increased traffic congestion on Route 66 due to increasing numbers of people commuting into Aurora for work or pleasure; however, this has been largely alleviated through new development adjacent to Route 66 including various shopping malls and office complexes which have helped preserve some character assets unique to Berwyn while also providing more space for businesses both inside and outside the village limits
