The Bradley Coast Guard Station was started in 1916 as the Second Coast Guard Training Center at the then-new Bradley Navy Yard. The station served as a training ground for the First and Second Squadrons of the Illinois Naval Militia, and also played an important role in coastal defense during World War II. In 1957, the Coast Guard Station moved to its present location on Braden Island. In 1969, it was renamed to honor Rear Admiral Harry W. Bradley Jr., who had been head of U.S. Strategic Command from 1961 to 1966.
Bradley, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 5,834 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Bradley is located on the southern edge of the city and it takes up most of its eastern border with Wilmette to the north. Its western border is with Park Ridge to the south and west.
