Bradley became a post office in 1846 and prospered until the late 1800s. The population of Bradley peaked at around 2,000 in 1900 but fell rapidly during the 20th century due to numerous economic factors including prohibition, World War I, and various natural disasters. In 1948, Bradley became a city when it merged with neighboring Unadilla. Today, Bradley remains a small unincorporated community within Kane County with a population of just over 100 residents. The early history of Bradley can be traced back to 1836 when John Bradley donated land to the village of Unadilla for settlement purposes. From its founding until approximately 1850,Unadilla had no municipal government and relied completely on indigenous citizens for services such as firefighting and farming. When United States Congress passed the General Land Revenue Act of 1785 which mandated that all land west of the Mississippi River be taxed at ten dollars per acre, Unadilla’s reliance on Indians began to decline and it soon became apparent that additional infrastructure needs must be addressed before any growth could occur in the village center. Accordingly, John Bradley offered his land across from his home on State Road 1 as an inducement for Representatives James Kappenheimer (D-IL) and Elijah Hicks (R-IL) to pass legislation authorizing creation of a new village seat within Unadilla Township specifically designated for this purpose. On February 12th 1887, local residents voted 3-2 in favor of incorporation into Kane County despite objections from neighboring townships whose leaders feared thatBradley would become too large and competitively oriented; indeed much like later Chicago neighborhoods such as Maywood or Englewood which relied heavily upon white collar jobs while offering sparse public transportation options To date there are no surviving records documenting how or why admission into Kane County was granted but subsequent histories suggest that county officials were influenced by reports indicating heavy industry potential located just south of downtown Chicago along State Road 1 – now known as Elston Avenue – making annexation an attractive proposition given its proximity to major markets . In 1888 following completion of Illinois Central Railroad’s line through town from Terre Haute northward,[6] many businesses opened up along Route 7 including two stores operated by Abraham Lincoln & Son which remain extant today[7] alongside numerous residential properties dating back to pioneer days when most families resided near their farmsteads rather than outlying villages/townships . In addition circa 1888 several Fuller Brothers grocery stores[8][9] were built adjacent to Route 7 between Harrison Lake Drive & Old Hwy 61 becoming one of largest employer base east sideChicago during this time period ; these Grocery store buildings still stand today
