The base was named after General Curtis LeMay and it served as a training ground for fighter pilots. It also housed the first air traffic control tower in Illinois. In 1957, Brookfield became home to the Aggressor Squadron, which was responsible for providing aerial support to law enforcement officers during riots. On October 6, 1960, General Curtis LeMay presented Air Force Colonel James E. "Eddie" Payne with a jet trainer known as the F-111A Spectre. The first settler in what became Brookfield was Amos ButterFIELD who arrived in 1824 from Massachusetts. He ranched land near present day Brookfield and built a cabin in 1829. The first post office was established at ButterFIELD in 1830. In 1837, Luther BUSSE moved to Brookfield from Vandalia Township, Michigan with his family and started a tannery which served as a major economic engine for early Brookfield settlers. In 1865, John FOSTER opened an ice cream business on Elm Street in what would become known as Foster's Field (then called "Foster's Creamery"). At that time it was one of the largest businesses of its kind west of the Mississippi River. That same year, William COOKS founded Cooks Meat Market on State Street adjacent to his bakery where he sold meat by retail as well as selling produce and eggs from his home shop.. At that time it was one of the largest meat markets east of Chicago.. In 1871 JOSEPH KEMP began construction of Kirkland Depot on Elmwood Avenue which would serve as a transportation hub for farmers bringing their goods to market across Lake Shore Drive and West Side Highway
Brookfield was founded in 1847 by George and Martha Sawyer. The city was named after the Brookfield River, which flows through it. The Sawyer family first opened a small grocery store on the west side of town. In 1860, they built the first gristmill in Brookfield. By 1870, the mill had become one of the largest in Illinois. In 1898, the city moved to its present location on East Main Street.
