Brookfield is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 146,816 at the 2010 census. The Chicago metropolitan area had a population of 2,815,825 as of 2015. Brookfield is the home to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Illini Health System. The city of Brookfield was founded in 1836 by John Brooks and his brother Amos on the west side of Chicago. It was named for one of the rivers that flow through Chicago. In 1857, General James K. Polk recommended that the name be changed to "Brookfield," in honor of George Washington's field headquarters near Philadelphia during the Revolutionary War (1775-1783). The first post office opened in Brookfield on October 25, 1857. At that time it consisted only of three dwellings and two stores; however, by 1860 there were over 50 businesses with a total population of 1,600 people. In 1865–1866, President Abraham Lincoln visited Brookfield while he was campaigning for reelection and signed an executive order authorizing construction of Northwestern Memorial Hospital which would become one of America's leading healthcare providers – becoming known as "The White House Hospital". When Illinois became a state in 1868 Brooks moved his company from Englewood to Brookfield so he could continue business operations at Northwestern Memorial Hospital under new management under then Governor Belknap Lamar (1868-1870).
