The Marine Museum of Brookfield was founded in 1968 by Dr. Edward J. Dooley and his wife, Mrs. Evelyn A. Dooley. The museum is located on the waterfront in downtown Brookfield and has a collection of more than 2,000 artifacts from marine history dating back to the 1800s.
Brookfield is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 27,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Brookfield is one of the largest villages in Illinois and has a land area of 5 square miles (13 km²). The Village of Brookfield was organized on November 7, 1847 from portions of the towns of Danville and Kankakee. At its incorporation, it had a population of 1,521. On December 12, 1853, it passed an ordinance providing for school purposes and increasing its size to 3 square miles (10 km²). The first public school buildings were erected in 1854. In 1907-1908 there were two high schools - One at 601 N Milwaukee Avenue and one at 625 W State Street - within the boundaries of Brookfield; though both now closed. There are no high schools within the present boundaries of Brookfield Village but all residents are required by law to attend public schools within a five-mile radius or they must send their children to private schools located in that radius if they wish to do so. On January 1, 2002, much to the chagrin of some residents who felt that open space should have been given preference over development near their homes as part of village zoning regulations,[1] Village President Greg DeHart vetoed all but three changes made to village zoning by then-Village Clerk Terri Koester during her first term as president effective February 1st[2]. As such these "revisions," which eliminated entrance restrictions on Certain types(s) new businesses being opened in other areas near residences/businesses while maintaining diversity along with eliminations on single family dwellings also went into effect effective February 1st 2002 without DeHart's signature; effectively giving Koester carte blanche when No action followed thereafter resulting in complaints filed against her office with state government spying operations being conducted inside village walls! What started out as just another power struggle between elected officials soon turned into what became known as "the wars" between Koester and DeHart leading up to what would ultimately be her ouster from office allegations ranging from ethics violations through wiretapping knocking on doors targeting political opponents! What followed was more than just politics; it was also an organizational battle pitting villagers against each other as members tried frantically to adapt or adopt technology that had become available sinceDeHart's time as president; including cellular service providers service agreements finally coming online after years worth negotiations! In spite of this turmoil many people still call themselves "Brookfields." The community was founded by German immigrants in 1835 and named after the brooks that flow through it. Brookfield's history dates back to 1835 when the first settlers arrived in what is now McLean County. They were farmers who operated small businesses near their homes. In 1847, the first electric company was organized in this area and was called the Chicago Electric Light and Power Company (CE&P). CE&P provided service to residents of nearby towns such as Geneva and Mount Prospect until 1888 when it merged with Chicago Edison Railway Company (CER) to form Chicago Edison Limited (CE). CE&P continued providing service until 1951 when it merged with Northwestern Bell Telephone Company (NBC) to become America Telephone & Telegraph Corporation (AT&T). AT&T moved its corporate headquarters from Denver, Colorado to Arlington Heights, Illinois in 1984. Since its establishment as an American telephone company, AT&T has played a significant role in how Brookfield functions today. For example, early on AT&T developed microwave services which are still used today by many businesses across town; while also developing late-night fiber optic services which allow for faster internet speeds than traditional phone companies could provide; as well as supporting numerous other initiatives within the community including civic partnerships and youth programming.
