During this time period, Wm Burke & Son continued to operate both their retail store and their company shipyard which handled both commercial and naval vessels sales/repair services. In 1933-1934 Wm Burke & Son merged with J Smeaton & Sons Ltd., a British shipping giant who had interests throughout Europe (including America). As a result of this merger, Wm Burke & Son became one of Britain’s leading marine retailers before eventually going bankrupt in 1967 due to changes in British laws affecting maritime sales/trade). Burr Ridge is a small town located in the eastern portion of Cook County, Illinois. The population was 963 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Burr Ridge was founded in 1847 by George Burr and his wife Sarah. George Burr was an early settler in this area and he named the village after himself, Burr Ridge. The first post office was established in Burr Ridge on October 26, 1847. settlements were started south of Burr Ridge and east of present-day Grayslake until the opening of Main Street through those areas in 1857 created what is now Burr Ridge Township. In 1871, a new well was drilled on land now nearpresent-day Grayslake and burridge became known as "The Wellsboro Village." During World War II residents raised chickens for local consumption and then sold them to soldiers stationed at Fort Sheridan for food rationing purposes. After the war ended, many people left Burr Ridge for better opportunities elsewhere in Cook County but some remain today including Peggy Koppes who still resides on Main Street with her husband Bob Koppes (1911-1998). Today, most businesses within Burr Ridge are family owned with one or more descendants working inside those businesses or starting their own businesses when they reach a certain age or must leave their parents' business to start their own family unit.
