Carpentersville, Illinois is a small town located in McLean County, Illinois. The population was 4,387 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Carpentersville were Nicholas and his wife Margaret who arrived in 1814. They built a log cabin on the site that still stands today. In 1835, John Carpenter married Sarah Godfrey and moved to Carpentersville from Jacksonville, Indiana. He began construction of his home on South Main Street which still stands today as one of the oldest buildings in Carpentersville. John and Sarah had four children: Anna (1836-1915), Samuel (1839-1912), Hester (1841-1920), and Mary (1843-1920). After Sarah's death in 1915, Anna took over management of her father's business until he died in 1920. Samuel also ran the business until his death in 1912. After Samuel's death, Hester took over management until she too died in 1920. Finally, after all three women deaths, Mary assumed control of the business until it was sold to Alyssa Kornegay in 1935. John Carpenter Boulevard was named for him when it was created as a street name within Carpentersville village limits during World War II because so many locals had worked on building supplies for military personnel located nearby such as Aviation Plant No 1 at Danbury Airport and USS Constitution Hospitals shipyards at Mare Island Naval Shipyard near San Francisco Bay Bridgehead during wartime shortages of manufactured goods due to war production quotas set by President Franklin D Roosevelt following extensive study by national committees appointed by Congress looking into ways to improve American war production capabilities including recommendations for creating regional industrial areas where local industries could be pooled for wartime production needs resulting ultimately with establishment of Springfield Township as an area surrounding Danbury Airport seeking annexation by then existing Danbury Township which accepted annexation but failed to achieve financial stability providing opportunity for development around airport through covenants entered into betweenDanbury Township officials et al.: "It is our hope that this grant will provide some new impetus or stimulation towards redevelopment or increased retail sales around John Carpenter Boulevard leading away from its current commercial dead end."
