Crestwood, Illinois is a small town located in Sangamon County, Illinois. The population was 807 at the 2010 census. Crestwood is one of two villages in Sangamon County, the other being Homer Glen. The first permanent settler in Crestwood was James Wigglesworth, who came from Hartford, Connecticut in 1824. He built a log cabin on the site of what is today the Village Hall. In 1827 he married Maria Powers and they started to farm around what is now the corner of State Street and Elm Street. The couple had six children: John (1828-1894), Jane (1830-1912), Anna (1834-1925), Lorenzo (1838-1900), and William Hutton Wigglesworth (baptized December 12th 1840). In 1852 an act of Congress called for a survey of all lands within ten miles of Springfield, Illinois to be surveyed for farming purposes by commissioners appointed by President Andrew Johnson. This led to the erection of the first schoolhouse in Crestwood – it was built on land donated by Mr. Wigglesworth’s daughter Jane – which served as both home and school until moved to its current location in 1865 when Crestwood villagehood was created. Crestwood is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,634 at the 2010 census. Crestwood was founded in 1868 by George and Anna Crestwood. The Crestwoods were originally from Connecticut and immigrated to Kane County in 1868. Crestwood is known for its agricultural products, particularly corn and soybeans. It also produces apples, pears, chickens, pigs, beef cattle, and potatoes. Crestwood is located in the northeast corner of Kane County on Wabash Avenue between State Route 20 and State Route 81 north of Interstate 80. According to the 2010 census it has a total area of , all land. The first settler in what would become Crestwood was George Crestwood who arrived with his wife Anna on October 9th 1868 when they moved from Hartford to start a new life in what would be their home county of Kane County. George had been born July 12th 1792 at Stamford Bridge (now part of Derby), Connecticut but died August 29th 1865 while serving as captain of Company B US Volunteers during the Civil War years according to information found online at Ancestry DNA which can be verified by research done at WikiTree which includes records for both places given above). His wife Anna married Peter Kapp about December 1863 and together they farmed land near present day Crane Road until 1870 when they relocated to their current location where they raised four children: Mabel Kapp-1901-1971; Edward Arents-1887-1975; Rena Haskins-1890-1974; and Gladys Arents (née Phillips) 1922-. The family farm produced hay, eggs, cornmeal mush & peas etc., until 1935 when World War II began making production difficult due to wartime rationing restrictions however continued production until 1957 thanks largely to efforts by Mrs Haskins herself who remains an active diehard community member today as president/founder/director emeritus of the CrestWOOD Orchard@home nursery school located on her property adjoining that of her late husband’s farmstead -http://www1a1p1c3g4d2h3t5e3/. In addition to their own crops they grew vegetables such as carrots (from bulbs collected during winter); turnips (from winter root); rutabaga( Turnip RutaBaga ); collards; kale( Romaine or Savoy Lettuce ); sweet peas etc.; pumpkins; squash (Zucchini or Butternut Squash ); gourds such as Old World Gourds ; watermelons etc.; many others not mentioned here are still enjoyed by locals today including: blueberries; honeydews; grapeseed oilseed rape seeds etc.. As mentioned earlier many items grown on this particular family farm went into market alongside other produce during those early years including hay bales used for bedding animals like Pigs & Cows & later wagons filled with hay back then called 'barn hogs' now known as feeders for pets today -See Hay Bales page for more details! It wasn't until after World War II that things really changed with food shortages following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor which led to increased demand for U.S.-produced goods especially vegetable oils especially gasoline since much acreage had been devoted towards industrial farming activities supplying munitions makers worldwide - See Rationing periods page for more details! In 1946 Anna erected the first modern house within sight of her home field just off Crane Road now known affectionately as "Old Auntie"'s House - Now owned by local Historical Society!. Crestwood was first settled in the early 1800s by Methodists. In 1827, a Baptist church was built in Crestwood. The town was founded on the banks of the Illinois River. Crestwood became a city in 1903 and was renamed after Admiral David Dixon (1794-1867) who fought in the American Revolution and in the Mexican-American War. Dixon is also known for his role as president of the Board of Trade from 1853 to 1861.
