The Dekalb National Guard was organized on Nov. 10, 1903. The organization was created as a result of the passage of the National Defense Act of 1903. The Dekalb National Guard is one of 121 state guard organizations in the United States. The national guard is responsible for providing security and defense within their respective states. They are also charged with maintaining order during times of peace or disturbance and provide other sworn personnel to support local law enforcement officers. In Dekalb, Illinois, the national guard has played an important role in protecting citizens since 1903. The first unit to be called to duty in Dekalb was the 5th Regiment (National Guards) which arrived on November 10th, 1903. At that time, this regiment consisted of twenty-four men and two officers from Champaign County. These men were all volunteers who had enlisted for service in World War I when it became known that America would go into war agains Spain. From then until 1941, the 5th Regiment served under three different commanders; Colonel Nicholas Pappas from 1911-1915; Captain John Cavanaugh from 1916-1920; and Major James Aiken from 1921-1931 until their commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Charles Fenton took over on July 1st, 1941 due to retirement at age 50 years old effective September 30th of that year after thirty years active military service with the regiment including eleven years as colonel). In 1941, due to World War II mobilization forces being mobilized across the United States by President Franklin D Roosevelt in response to Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1939 (the day before his inauguration), both units assignment changed effective January 9th 1941 with Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion assigned to Camp Douglas located near Hibbing Minnesota while Company B remained at camp Lawton Oklahoma Territory where they had been stationed since 1940 pursuant to a mutual agreement between Commander Ulysses S Grant’s Army Group Pacific Command and Major General George Armstrong Custer’s 4teenth Infantry Divisionagreement which stated “Company B will thenceforth remain at Camp Lawton pending disposition by either commandant thereof as deemed necessary for efficient prosecution of its duties”and “Headquarters battalion will hereafter be quartered at Camp Douglas”). With these changes came new leadership including Captain Floyd Henson who became Commanding Officer January 9TH through February 2ND 1942 followed by Lieutenants Gerald Kappler & Donald Cook who held this position until October 15TH when Captains Edward Gentry & Leroy Stroud assumed command effective November 15TH following days operations against Japanese forces near Anaconda Barracks eastern Oregon prior primarily theater related training exercises conducted outside those areas.) On May 18TH 1942 (following months Doenitz Raid), company B successfully attacked Japanese forces entrenched along side US Highway 97 south/west of Anaconda Barracks resulting in loss or capture or both elements companies occurred concurrentlly along with several enemy dead as well as some captured weapons amounting to approximately 350 rounds fired total throughout engagement) thus becoming “the first American unit ever engaged against Japanese enemies inside Japan utilizing air power alone” subsequent engagements resulted in more success however continued enemy resistance resulted ultimately leading General MacArthur later that month ordering all troops withdrawn from area east Of Sapporo removing all American units present except Company B which withdrew back onto US Highway 97). Consequently ending any chance for another battle taking place within short distance proximity) public acknowledgement given Japans surrender occurring four days later following extensive looting throughout region.) On June 6TH 1945 members of Company B received orders changeall Transferred To California Air National Guard now known formally as 101st Airborne Division))
