The name "East Peoria" was given to the town by General George Washington and Major General Josiah Harmar on July 4th, 1796 as a compliment to their military victory over France at the Battle of Princeton. The townsite was organized on December 12th, 1837. In 1853 it became a village and in 1865 it became a city. On January 1st, 2002 East Peoria annexed the neighboring community of Rockford-Grimesville. At that time the combined population of both communities was 82,814 people. East Peoria is located at (41°27′39″N 95°19′28″W). It has an elevation of . According to the 2010 census, its total area is , making it one of the smallest cities in Illinois by total area. According to legend there once were two rivers running through this small town: one ran east and one ran west; but when they merged they created only one stream which flowed south from east to west through downtown East Peoria until it emptied into Racine Lake on the north side of town - thus accounting for all those bridges! One popular tradition in East Peoria is watching free street dances during pumpkins season every October while sipping Pumpkin Spice Latte's! Peoria was founded in 1837 by John C. Marius as a small village on the east side of the Peoria River. The first store, built by Marius, opened in 1838. In 1840, the village became a town and around that time it began to grow rapidly with new businesses established. By 1850, Peoria had a population of over 100 people and boasted three churches and two schools. In 1860, the Illinois General Assembly passed a bill authorizing the erection of a state Capitol in Peoria. The citizens of Peoria quickly raised money to finance the project and construction began soon after. The new Capitol was completed in 1862 and soon afterwards became an important center for government activity in central Illinois. In 1872, during an economic downturn caused by railroad construction across the state line into Indiana, Peoria lost its status as a town but still thrived thanks to its strong commercial ties with nearby Bloomington and Indianapolis. Thanks to this partnership, Peoria continued to grow robustly until World War II when it faced significant challenges due to wartime rationing which destroyed much of its business infrastructure. After the war ended however, growth resumed and by 1990 had reached its present size with over 120 businesses operating within its boundaries
