East Peoria, Illinois was founded in 1847 by John F. Smith and Company as a town on the banks of the Sangamon River. The name honor General James K. Polk who died in 1881 while serving as President of the United States. East Peoria grew rapidly and by 1860 had a population of 1,500 people. In 1865, the local railroad company became part of Chicago & Northwestern Railroad which allowed for faster growth and development in East Peoria. The city's first school was built in 1870 and by 1886 it had doubled its size to 2,000 students using three buildings on Main Street between Center and South Streets. By 1915, there were over 10 schools in East Peoriia with an enrollment of over 20,000 students annually. In 1916, East Peoria became the site of World War I when General George Smedley Butler ordered all American soldiers to cross the river into Illinois to fight for our country against Russia. The initial response from residents was mixed but eventually support turned out totaling more than $2 million dollars toward developing munitions plants and other war-related endeavors. During World War II civilians organized themselves into committees to help get food sources for military forces staging at various points around the area; this helped contribute significantly to victory during that conflict.
