Edwardsville, Illinois is the birthplace of the United States Army. The first U.S. Army was raised in Edwardsville on November 6, 1812 under General Anthony Wayne. The City of Edwardsville was founded by Andrew Jourdan in 1827 as a Methodist Episcopal town in what was then Cook County. On December 15, 1831, John Ziegler bought 2/3 of total land in present-day Edwardsville from Andrew Jourdan for $1 million dollars. The site had been chosen because it would include a canal that would allow easy transport of heavy artillery ammunition to points near Chicago. In 1836 Ziegler donated 1 acre (0.50 hectare) to the Illinois State Normal School which became known as Central University and now Northern Illinois University; he left all his remaining land to Central University when he died in 1840s At this time there were 4 colleges or universities within 3 miles of each other: Central University (now NIU), Beloit College (now Northwestern University), DePaul IL (now UIUC), and Western Reserve Univry (now Cleveland State Univerity). On October 12, 1861, at 5:00 AM local time Union troops marched into town from Carbondale on orders from General Ulysses S Grant to suppress any pro- Southern sentiment among its citizens who might be found living west of Springfield Road across Chicago River from Fort Dearborn Barracks on North Lake Shore Drive - later renamed Soldier's Memorial Park after American Civil War veterans buried thereabouts including General George Washington Carver - followed by more than 100 cannon shots over an open field west of downtown; this event is commemorated annually by a patriotic parade through downtown streets ending at Soldier's Memorial Park where wreath-laying ceremonies are held during Veteran's Day weekend

During World War I, Edwardsville played an important role within the American attack on German forces occupying Belgium; many residents volunteered their time and services throughout that conflict effort.
