In 1869 Captain Gustavus Swenzel of the US Navy donated 875 acres (387 hectares), including what are now Elk Grove and Glenview Heights to DuPage County for $10,000USD; this parcel became known as Swenzel Park/Dixon Park. In 1955, Elk Grove voters passed a resolution recognizing "the historical significance" of the railroad and dedicated a street in their town to commemorate it. The first grocery store opened in Elk Grove in 1902 by Mrs. French and her husband John C., Sr.. The store continued to be run by Mrs. French until 1980 when it became part of Village Grocery Cooperative which later merged with other cooperative stores throughout Kane County . In 1984, Community Stores Inc., an independent retailer opened its first location in ElkGrove Village .
