Air Force gift history in Elmwood Park, Illinois began with the creation of the United States Air Force on December 17, 1947. The USAF was formed to provide air support for the United States military during World War II. By 1949, the USAF had become an independently operational branch of the US military. On July 20, 1951, President Harry S Truman signed into law the National Defense Authorization Act which provided funds for postwar defense spending and created the USAF as a separate service within the US military. In 1957, General Curtis LeMay became commander of USAF Operations Marianas and Johnston Atoll commands were activated to help secure key areas in Southeast Asia from communist aggression. On September 11th, 1958 Colonel John Foulke Jr., Commander at Elmwood Park AFB flew a McDonnell Douglas DC-8C jet liner carrying two Boeing 707 passenger planes carrying 512 Marines from Marine Base Quantico Virginia bound for Vietnam. Captain David Ahern piloted one of these planes while First Lieutenant Timothy J Myers piloting another jetliner served as executive officer on board both flights. All three jets crashed into mountains near Da Nang AB killing all aboard including Colonel Foulke Jr., Captain Ahern and First Lieutenant Myers. This event is considered to be one of aviation history's most notorious crashes due to its catastrophic effects on human life and property. The crash has been called "The Night Of The Long Knives". The following year saw changes within USAF when General Hap Arnold assumed command after General Curtis LeMay's retirement. Arnold believed that airpower could play a greater role in war than ground troops and wanted instead an integrated air force capable of conducting operations across all battlefields simultaneously instead of just bombing or taking aerial photos like previous commanders had done. As part of this new strategy, Arnold ordered development of what would become known as "the strategic bomber" which was a nuclear-armed flying wing aircraft designed to conduct precision airstrikes against enemy targets using high altitude explosives and guided munitions rather than relying solely on fighter pilots or bombers operating close to ground targets like earlier generations had done. This change not only changed how wars were fought but also forever changed American society by making air power their primary tool for warfare – something that would continue through Operation Desert Storm in 1990 and Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001). In 1969 Major General Edwin Evers became Commanding Officer at Elmwood Park AFB when it was renamed Elmwood Park Air National Guard Base after being moved from Wright-Patterson AFB OH (now Dayton) where it operated under Tactical Air Command (TAC). During his tenure at Elmwood Park he supervised growth within AFWG from 1 squadron to 52 units; increased bomber strength; installation/activation/maintained numerous Missile Sites throughout our Nation; initiated many exciting programs including: Blue Jay III Intelliflight Demonstration Project & final test launch performance based upon results achieved culminated with successfulfirst deployment = FIRST TIME EVER IN THE AIR FORCE! After serving as commanding general for AFWG until his death on October 15th 2002 he is considered one of America's most highly respected Generals during its time period since he led USAF during some very critical years such as Desert Storm & Kosovo Wars while stillArmy Commander leading components thereof

The Elmwood Park, Illinois Air Force Base gift history began in the late 1940s with donations of clothing and other items from enlisted airmen. In 1949, the air force gifted a tent to the Elmwood Park Community Hall. The following year, the military donated a locomotive and carriages to help with local community events. In 1951, a new hangar was built onsite for the Elmwood Park Air Force Base Squadronallion program. From 1959-1971, gifts were given monthly in commemoration of United States Armed Forces Day. In 1971, a tornado destroyed much of downtown Elmwood Park and resulted in many injuries sustained by residents and visitors. After that event, donations ceased until 1984 when an adjacent park was donated for use as the Air Force Memorial Museum. From 1984-1992, gifts were given every other month in memory of fallen service members serving during Operation Desert Storm. From 1992-1996, gifts were given once per month in memory of fallen service members serving during Operation Iraqi Freedom orOperation Enduring Freedom. Elmwood Park is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 4,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community is located on the west side of Chicago, bordered by Elston to the south and west, and Winnetka to the north. Elmwood Park is one of two towns in Cook County that are both incorporated as villages (the other being Arlington Heights). Elmwood Park has a total land area of 7 square miles (16 km²). The village was founded in 1881 as a result of an effort by local farmers to form a consolidated township with more than 1,500 residents. The first three trustees were James W. Hynes, George Alysius and John Dolan; they were all from Elmwood Park. On April 15th, 1886, Mayor Edward Byrne announced that Elmwood Park had been incorporation into the city of Chicago; this made it one of four municipalities withinChicago which had been annexed since 1867 when Chicago was created as an organized municipality. In 1901, it became part of the new Roosevelt–Washington Township which included most of what is now Cook County to the east and north-east including much of downtown Chicago. In 1922-1923 it became part of Elk Grove Village before becoming part of Douglas Heights in 1984 following its annexation into Douglas Township name change from Roosevelt–Washington Township to Douglas Heights Borough name change from Deerfield Township name change from Deerfield Township to Douglas Heights Borough on January 1st 1984 effective date/time Change Order No.# 007-1984 In 2000*, Elmwood Park lost its high school district designation due to financial issues*. In 1951, the United States Air Force gift shop was opened at Wright-Patterson AFB. It was the first USAF gift shop and functioned as an air force surplus store for personnel and their families. Elmwood Park is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. The Village of Elmwood Park was organized on November 3, 1871 by the merger of two other villages: Elmhurst and Arlington Heights. At its incorporation, Elmwood Park had a population of 2,362. It grew rapidly during the early years of the 20th century due to waves of immigration from Eastern Europe and Poland which increased employment and resident populations. Development slowed in the late 1920s as World War II brought an increase in military production and housing growth; however, it accelerated again following the war's end in 1945. In 1960, Elmwood Park passed a resolution to become an incorporated town; this vote was later repealed by referendum because most residents wanted to remain a village. As part of Cook County's efforts to improve infrastructure for growing populations over time, plans were developed for annexation of nearby communities including Highland Park (1924), Mount Prospect (1929), Grayslake (1933), Winnetka (1945) and Riverview Heights (1963). The annexation process began in 1967 but was halted due to legal challenges from several community members who argued that they still constituted part of Elmwood Park. In 2000–2001 negotiations began anew but failed to reach agreement between both parties; after months of discussion with no clear winner emerging, negotiations recommenced on September 12th 2001 under new leadership but ultimately failed as well due to disagreements about how much power each party felt should be given back to the village center. Finally on January 25th 2003Village officials announced that they would seek re-election as a unincorporated community rather than becoming an incorporated town because they felt their status meant more support from government resources available within their boundaries- this decision made them ineligible for participation in any future governmental initiatives or programs administered by Cook County unless granted city status through legislation or consent decree approval. On July 1st 2004Village officials announced that they have applied for city status through state law which would allow them greater authority with respect to taxation and spending within their borders- this announcement created some excitement among residents who hoped their request would result in better services and improved amenities such as public transportation access or expanded shopping opportunities at local malls
