The Elmwood Park, Illinois National Guard gift history begins in 1944 when the National Guard was first organized in Illinois. The unit was activated as the 344th Infantry Regiment and served during World War II. In 1946, the regiment was redesignated as the 6th Infantry Division and served in Korea before being demobilized in 1953. In 1954, the division was reorganized as a brigade-level unit and reformatted as the 513th Infantry Brigade. The brigade served in Vietnam before returning to Illinois in 1967. The 513th Infantry Brigade was again redesignated as the Elmwood Park, IL National Guard District 914th Infantry Brigade on February 25, 1969. The brigade served in Louisiana until it moved to Elmwood Park on July 1, 1969 where it remained until its disbandment on October 18, 1972.
Elmwood Park, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield– Carbondale–Alton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Elmwood Park was first settled in 1848 by Quakers from Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. The original name for the town was "Eagle Ford", after a creek that ran through it. In 1853, the trustees of a school district in Mclean County decided to move the school from Eagle Ford to what is now Elmwood Park because they felt it would be more convenient for residents and easier to manage than locations in other towns within the district. The first public school in Elmwood Park was built on land donated by Mayor John Auld and Rev. James Bryant on November 8, 1853. What is now Elmwood Park was originally part of Carbondale Township; however, on December 1, 1860 Carbondale Township merged with Macon Township to form McLean County. On January 1, 1865 the township renamed itself Elmwood Park after its own private home there had been destroyed by fire two years earlier. Elmwood Park has had several different names over time: Eagle Ford (1848-1853), Carbondale (1860-1865), Macon (January 1 1865-present), and finally Elmwood Park (November 8 1953). As one of only a few communities located entirely within Mclean County when it formed in 1860, Elmwood Park developed its own unique culture and politics distinct from those found elsewhere within Cook County or even neighboring states during that time period."

Elmwood Park was founded in 1892 and was named after Elmhurst, a large forested area near Chicago. The first residents of what would become Elmwood Park were German immigrants who arrived in 1847. By 1870 the town had been organized and was home to about 120 people. A post office was established in 1872 and mail service began from Elmwood Avenue. The community grew rapidly during the early years of its existence thanks to the arrival of railroad access and the development of industry nearby. In 1886, the first hardware store opened in Elmwood Park and soon became one of the most popular businesses in town. Many important people associated with Elmwood Park have included dentists Drs John Roper (1868-1941) and Hugh McLaughlin (1871-1949). With McLaughlin's help, Elmwood Park began developing into one of Chicagoland's leading business communities during the late 19th century. He also played an important role as part of civic affairs in downtownElmwood Park for many years before his death in 1949.
