The Geneva, Ill. Army National Guard was organized on Dec. 15, 1863, when the Illinois Legislature created a national guard for the state of Illinois. The first major action in order to form the Guard took place on Jan. 1, 1864, when Colonel John A. McClernand led an infantry regiment into Valparaiso County to quash a peaceful local protest against land seizures by the Union government. The Guard was not always easy to come by and often lacked resources; however its spirit and commitment knew no bounds. In 1865-1866, the Guard fought in several large battles including Gettysburg and Cedar Creek while also providing security for food supplies during the Siege of Vicksburg following General Robert E. Lee's retreat from that Confederate stronghold. In 1868-1869, Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Cushing served as Commandant of the Guards at Fort Snelling and then at Camp Chase near Dubuque before being promoted to Major general Nov., 1869). With his promotion came increased responsibilities for both men and unit within the Guardsman community which helped solidify their role as a key part of American society during this time period (Cushing died in 1899). On July 14th 1889, following an act by President James Kinchner authorizing military veterans who had served in Illinois Volunteers or Regular army during Wounded Warrior Week (July 8-14) to receive certificates of discharge from their units (the original concept behind Veterans Day), 3rd Battalion Chicago Rifles became one of fifty-six American Legion battalions authorized membership on October 6th 1889 under First Lieutenant Edward Everett Kinney (1902 - 1990). On November 16th 1890 First Lt Kinney was killed while leading elements of his battalion against Indian forces along with other members of his battalion at what is now known as site 548 south side street in Geneva located just east of where IGA stands today (site still contains remains)). Lieutenants Edwin Wetherbee( 1888 - 1893), Hiram Gilbert( 1889 - 1897), George Haggerty( 1895 - 1901) and Charles Walczykowski( 1896 - 1898) filled kinney’s shoes until he was finally succeeded by Second Lieutenant Arthur Bliss Tiffany on January 1st 1902 (). Tiffany relinquished command effective February 10th 1902 due to ill health but remained with Headquarters Company through World War I until it disbanded on September 30th 1918 less than two months after America entered war ). From date organization until disbandment there were nineteen officers and over three thousand enlisted soldiers who served with 3rd Battalion Chicago Rifles throughout our nation’s conflict .

On January 1, 1893, it became the Second Infantry Regiment. The regiment was redesignated as the Third Infantry Regiment on October 16, 1899. The regiment was redesignated as the Fourth Infantry Regiment on February 14, 1902. It became the Fifth Infantry Regiment on October 13, 1912. The regiment was redesignated as the Sixth infantry Regiment on July 15, 1916. It became the Seventh infantry Regiment on June 20th of 1917 and re-designated as the Eighth infantry Regiment effective September 17th of that year.

Geneva was founded on December 12, 1814 by Swiss immigrants working for General James Wilkinson in what is now Champaign County. The town center was established in 1825 when a road from Urbana crossed over Prairie du Chien Creek near present day Geneva Mills. In 1835, Geneva became one of twenty towns incorporated into the then new State of Illinois. In 1860, it became an independent city under the name of "Geneva." The economic development of Geneva began with its incorporation into Illinois as well as its early growth as a transportation and trade center for southern Illinois due to its location at the crossroads between two major railroads and its easy access to navigable waterways. Not only did Geneva become an important transportation hub for southern Illinois but also because it had significant land holdings that allowed it to grow rapidly thanks to importation of goods from Europe and extensive agricultural production. In addition, many industrial plants were established in or around Geneva during this time including Dodge Manufacturing Company (now Fiat Chrysler Automobiles), Heidenheimer Electric Products Company (now Siemens Consumer Electronics), Wurster-Lange AG (now Allianz SE) and several other companies which would have a profound impact on later generations of residents and businesses in downtown Geneva. By 1930, however, much of downtown Geneva had been destroyed by fire following a night market bombing incident which left 24 people dead and scores injured
