It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The first settlers in what would become Granite City were men from Maine and Vermont who arrived in 1837. They founded a small town on the edge of present-day Granite City, named for their granitic rock formations (Granite Hill). In 1846, residents of nearby Bloomington voted to incorporate as a city; Bloomington had been under construction since 1845 and did not yet have its own municipal government. By 1870, Granite City had reached its peak as a manufacturing center with businesses such as Armour & Co., Wabash Coal Company, and Carbide Works contributing to its economic growth. However, during the Panic of 1893 there was great stress on industry due to falling prices for goods exported abroad and an increase in immigration from northern European countries caused by low wages back home. This led to high unemployment among workers at these companies and reductions in jobs throughout Illinois during that period. After the Panic ended, heavy industry gradually stopped expanding in Illinois and Granite City slowly lost its importance as an industrial center. At first they used natural quarries near where they lived but soon began making bricks from local limestone which became very strong because it had not been exposed to air or weathering products like lime or sand which damaged other materials like pottery or stone building contractors used traditional methods like hewing wood or crushing granite using bulldozers until pieces about 8x8 inches were cut out each time with a Horses backhoe then transported by wagon around 100 miles round trip to be set into placeI’ve never seen anything quite so impressive In 1865 when this process was changed to quarrying larger blocks I remember one particularly large block that we quarried weighing 1000 pounds that we took down with two horses working all day long !! That particular block has now been placed on display at our museum . During World War II many factories closed down due to wartime production restrictions however Granitice continued producing bricks even though much smaller quantities than usual because people still needed them for post-war homes After World War IIgranitice slowly lost its importance as an industrial center however it has regained some prominence over recent years through new development within its borders including tourism and real estate opportunities related thereto
