The Huntley Naval Air Station was founded in 1912 and has been a part of the United States Navy since World War I. The station operated two aircraft carriers, USS Constitution (1912-1914) and USS Lexington (1945-1946). In 1961, the station became an adjunct of the larger Naval Air Station at Beaufort, South Carolina. In 1978, Huntley was transferred to duty as a naval air base. In 1984, Huntley received its own squadron of McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornets. The squadron is now known as "Navy Flight 1". The first jet fighter squadron in the U.S., Navy's Fleet Fighter Squadron One (FFS-One), was activated at the Naval Air Station at Beaufort on November 3rd, 1984 under the command of Commodore Ronald Lyle Henshaw III. With this addition to NAS Beaufort’s inventory of jets and other support equipment for maritime Strike Fighter Squadron Two (STF-2), FFS-One became one of only two operational squadrons within Fleet Fighter Wing Fifteen (FFW-15). Since its activation, NAS Beaufort has served as home for both VFA-21 “Grizzlies” and VFA-22 “Bearcats”; bothysonically designated Marine Aerial Attack Squadron 212 also assigned there from Marine Aircraft Group Twenty Four (MAG 24). These were followed by Marine Helicopter Squadron 171 on July 1st 1989 which arrived after detachments from VMHAR unit VTOL Squadron Five Hundred Eighteen; these being followed by MHQR Detachment Three hundred seventy nine on December 1st 1994 when it joined VMHAR Unit VCK Detachment One hundred thirty seven at NAS Jacksonville Beach Florida. This detachment then served with HMMWV Battalion Sixteenth until January 1997 when their assignment moved ashore to become attached to 2nd MAJ(AW) Force Element aboard USS Enterprise Carrier Strike Group Two during Operation Desert Storm - May 1991 thru September 1991. All detachments that served during Desert Storm have since been relocated back aboard their original ship or carrier units where practicable due to continuous combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan . The current fire department building was built in 1952 and replaced an older structure that burned down in 1955. There are also three ambulance services which serve both local residents and patients from neighboring towns during times of emergencies such as car accidents or snowstorms; these services are operated by Northwestern Memorial Hospital Ambulance Service Inc., Aurora Fire Department paramedics, or Kane County Sheriff’s Department ambulances depending on whether there is an available ambulance for service within range at the time
