This made Joliet an important city because it had something important for everyone- a store, schoolhouse, and military fortification. In 1847, Abraham Lincoln became president of United States and since he rode around on horseback he decided that there should be a wagon road built from Springfield to Chicago so that goods could be brought down this road instead of being transported by boat or train. This wagon road became known as “The Lincoln Highway” because President Abraham Lincoln took part in its construction. The community today called “Joliet” began to grow when people moved into this area from other parts of Illinois and also from other states such as Indiana and Iowa. At first people only lived in small houses near downtown but eventually many more homes were built throughout the community. Over time many businesses opened up here including grocery stores, post office boxes, restaurants/bars/nightclubs etcetera!Today we still see some old buildings such as The Old Post Office which is located just outside of downtown Joliet on State Street! There are also a few amusement park rides scattered throughout town but most visitors come during rush hour when everything is open!

Joliet, Illinois is a city in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 128,651 at the 2010 census. Joliet is the largest city in DuPage County and one of its seven counties. It is located on the southern edge of Chicago and is bordered by Cook County to the east and north, Kane County to the west and south, and Will County to the southwest. The first people to live in what is now Joliet were hunters who lived near Clear Creek Reservoir. A post office called Joliet was established in 1847, but did not open until 1851. In 1857, a group of farmers led by George Stephenson built a small town on land that now includes most of Joliet. They named it Stephensonville after General Stephenson who had donated the land for the town. The first store opened in Stephensonville in 1860. By 1870, all businesses had closed because of low commodity prices caused by American Civil War shortages. However, due to efforts of Mayor John Fenton and others, business revived when railroads arrived in this area during the late 1800s; with mills such as those operated by Champion Iron Co., Armour & Company (now Allis-Champion), McCormick & Company (now Pepsi-ColaCo.), Phelps Dodge Corporation (now Hormel Foods) and Wabash Coal Corporation among them providing jobs for local residents during this time period In 1916 – just two years before World War I began – an act was passed which created DuPage County; including Joliet into it as well as other towns such as Hoffman Estates east of Chicago along with other rural areas withinDu Page Countys boundaries which would also become part of Chicagos suburbia over time During World War II many men from Joliet enlisted or were drafted into service: many worked at munitions plants or aluminum smelters located outside Joliotown/ Stephensonville . After V-E Day many men returned home to their families but some continued working at these plants through 1946 A steel plant operated by United Steelworkers Local 10B became perhaps one of earliest examples of management control exercised over workers through Collective Bargaining techniques known as Stewardship Projects conducted between 1943-1945 while production lagged behind Kaiser Aluminum Inc.'s plans
