In Illinois, justice was represented by the courts and justices who ruled on cases brought before them. The courts were responsible for maintaining order and fairness in the courtroom and also held sway over government policies. The justices were typically people who had experience with law and had a desire to see things done fairly and correctly. The first justice to be appointed to the Illinois Supreme Court was John Marshall Harlan in 1875. Harlan was a well-known jurist who had served on the US District Court for the Western District of Missouri before being appointed to the high court. He worked hard to make sure that every person had an equal chance at having their say in decisions made by the court system. Harlan’s tenure on the supreme court was very successful, and he helped solidify legal rights for individuals throughout Illinois. His work helped make sure that people felt like they could voice their opinions freely and have their voices heard no matter where they stood within society. After Harlan’s term ended, his successor, Adlai Stevenson II, went onto serve quite some time until he became president of America in 1961 – making him one of only two living presidents (the other being Franklin D Roosevelt) who served more than three terms as President of America (the other being George Washington). During Stevenson’s time as president, many social changes took place across Illinois due to his efforts at getting legislation passed which improved education opportunities statewide while ensuring equality between races and genders – all while upholding justice through rulings from the judiciary system
Justice was a critical part of the Illinois state government from the early days until the late 1800s. The first justice of the Illinois Supreme Court, John Marshall, was elected in 1792 and served for six years. In 1812, Springfield's first mayor, James K. Polk, appointed Judge Augustus Davenport to serve on the state's first judicial circuit which included all of Cook County except for its western border where Indiana then lay. A year later, in 1813, Polk reappointed Davenport to that same court Circuit and he served until his death in 1838. In 1836, Benjamin Fenton was elected as Justice of the Illinois State Senate and he served until his death in 1850. Theodore J. Logan was elected as Justice of the Illinois State Board of Education in 1840 and he served until his death in 1845. John Pemberton became an Associate Justice on November 1st, 1850 and he served until his resignation on December 5th due to illness. He was succeeded by Salmon Pinchot who also resigned due to illness but returned on February 3rd after recovering from surgery successfully performed at Bellevue Hospital Center in New York City which had been necessary because Pinchot had a tumor removed from his brain
