At that time, the village had only one store and two houses. Captain Salyer donated his home, which is still standing today, as a police station and barracks. In 1860-1861 Lieutenant Edward D’Alessandro served under Lieutenant Tomlinson with distinction; during those years he purchased three horses for use by the departmental cavalry unit known as “The Irish Brigade” which later became known as The White Knights of Columbus. In 1881-1882 Charles Lacy took command of laGrange Police Department; during his tenure Gifts were given away more than ever before! During His term Gifts were again given away liberally both inside and outside laGrangetowithout any hesitation or prevarication - just another example t hatLa Grangespolice departmentstoodbyitselfduringthisperiodofchallengesandtransitions!! In 1814, Joseph Smith founded Nauvoo on approximately 6 square miles (15 km2) near where today’s Indiana Street and Racine Avenue stand. When Nauvoo was destroyed by an attack led by Captain John Cushing on April 14–15, 1846 – one day before his martyrdom – Smith had already moved his headquarters elsewhere within Illinois due to building advances made during his previous two years as president of the Church at Nauvoo being opposed by some members there feeling he should have remained behind after achieving great successes at Cumorah City,. As early as 1824 local merchant Isaac Nibley began selling eggs from a cart on State Street adjacent to what is now Washington Park Cemetery; he soon outgrew this commercial venture and built a home on Egg Island which still stands today on Elmwood Road near State Street. By 1830 he had laid out streets through his property which became known as “Nibley Row” or simply “Nibley Streets” because many notable citizens lived close by including Solomon Wells (founder of Des Plaines), James Kinsman (ancestor of Mayor Richard Moline), Alfred Nobel (sonof inventor Alfred Nobel), Benjamin Franklin(a Founding Father), Elisha Pease(governor general under George Rogers Clark& governor general under Daniel Boone)), Moses Taylor(founder & first president & CEO American Telephone Company)and Elias Howe( chancellor Emeritus University Of Paris). In 1840 Nibley donated land east side of Wabash River between Richards Road and Cicero Avenue also known as “Nibley Hill” to form Capitol Park which still exists today with several Wanganui Maori ratai trees planted along its perimeter
