Lansing is a city in the Will County of Illinois, United States. The population was 97,868 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Wayne County. The city is bordered to the north by Detroit Township and to the south by Washtenaw County. To the east it borders Indiana. The first Europeans to visit what is now Lansing were French traders and explorers in 1608, who named it "Lachine". The first permanent residents were Native American tribes which built their villages around a water body on the Ottawa River called "Natchez", meaning "place where deer hunt". In 1795, John Davenport founded a fur trading post at Nipponya Landing on Grand River near present-day Lansingburgh. In 1805, George Washington's army passed through Lansing on its way from West Point to Cairo; General James K. Polk visited Michigan during his campaign for president in that year and ordered his troops quartered there until he could move them across the river into Illinois proper. In 1836, Michigan became an Ohio Territory; as a result of this change in state government, Lansing became part of Wayne County. A public school system was established there in 1839; between 1840 and 1850, saw growth due to construction of railroads connecting Detroit with other parts of America via Chicago and Cincinnati; many local businesses were founded during this time including three lumber mills that are still active today: Lumbermen’s Journal (founded1840), Mack Truck (+1952) and Van & El (founded1860). In 1851, when Indiana entered the Union as a new country, Wayne County lost its status as county seat because all civil government functions within Indiana were assumed by Indianapolis under state law no matter how much Wayne County may have wanted them continued. During World War II, with war production moving upriver towards Flint(now Ann Arbor), Lansing experienced an influx of refugees from Dearborn Heights/Warren Township which had been destroyed by fire in 1944; these refugees formed two camps known collectively as "The Towers" on northwest side of town just north of I-94 rural exit 123B after being displaced from their homes near Warren Park Cemetery following Order No 542 which authorizes burning all abandoned or destroyed buildings overidiologically infested with rats without providing mitigation plans or compensation to owners/ occupants/ shrine builders/. One reason why there wasn't any real housing development taking place outside The Towers until more recent times may be because few people wanted to live next door to unsightly warehouses full of cockroaches while attending university classes! After 1945 most refugees left but some stayed until they could find new homes elsewhere - currently about 10% remain living among us permanently! There has never been any big push for redeveloping those areas since then other than occasional talks about doing something like building schools or creating green space adjacent thereto but nothing ever comes along! Today's City Limits map does show one newly resurfaced piece pocket park off I-94 just eastside Of Wacker Drive sandwiched between Two Rivers Elementary School South Side Rd & East Side Rd
