From 1840 to1846, Lincoln served as president of the United States during the Mexican-American War. After his victory over Mexico in that war, Lincoln was elected president of the United States on November 6, 1861, defeating John C. Fremont (a candidate supported by many southern Democrats). As president, Lincoln launched several important social programs such as Social Security and Medicare. He also made critical decisions such as invading Canadian territory to end slavery there and annexing California. After his death in 1865, Lincoln is buried with his wife Elizabeth Grady Lincoln at Mount Rushmore National Monument in South Dakota.
