The Lockport Army Ammunition Plant was once one of the largest and most important arms dealers in the Midwest. The plant operated from 1892 until it closed in 1968. It manufactured artillery, rifle ammunition, mortar shells, and other munitions for the Union army during the American Civil War. Today, only a few pieces of machinery remain at the plant that produced munitions during what is known as “the Great Fire of 1922”. In honor of this event, Lockport has made a permanent memorial to veterans who lost their lives in the fire. This Memorial Park contains several Battlefield Sites including an outdoor amphitheater where veterans can listen to oral history exhibits about the war and local businesses that were impacted by its flames.

Lockport, Illinois is a small town in the north-central portion of the state of Illinois. The population was 21,491 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. In 1902–03, construction began on what would become America’s first skyscraper – One Washington Park – but only three stories were completed before it collapsed during an ice storm; no one was injured however several structures nearby were destroyed or damaged. The Panic of 1893 caused prices for goods to fall rapidly throughout much of America resulting in mass unemployment and local businesses going out of business including lockpicksmith shops across town cashing checks drawn on local banks overnight as people attempted to buy food on credit while they awaited news from distant cities that their jobs might not be taken away if rates continued falling! lockporting residents formed themselves into committees to try and get things done such as getting patronage from Ulysses S Grant who gave them 3 thousand dollars towards building new barracks for defense purposes!
