In 1830, when Illinois became a state under US Constitution following the Mexican–American War, Lombard's location made it one of several sites considered for an capital city on the Western frontier; but no action was taken until Governor Daniel Kneeland recommended that Chicago be selected as the site due to its potential as a commercial center with access to transportation and other resources necessary for growth. In 1835–36 local farmers petitioned legislature to establish a school district; but this request also failed due to lack of interest from legislators and local officials alike. In 1840 another group of farmers petitioned legislature to establish land sales districts which would have provided funds for schools; again this request did not receive much attention though it may have been more feasible had there been more awareness about educational opportunities available at that time within Illinois than there currently exists today among residents of Lombard or Chicago specifically about education opportunities available within Cook County specifically outside their neighborhoods/communities/districts!
