The National Guard of the United States, also known as the Illinois National Guard, is a paramilitary force in the United States that was created in 1861. The unit was originally called the Illini Infantry Regiment and saw service during the American Civil War. The unit surrendered to Union forces at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. Since its creation, the Illinois National Guard has participated in numerous wars and peacekeeping operations around the world. In fiscal year 2016, they were responsible for carrying out 2,811 missions statewide. As of September 2017, they had over 6500 military members and civilians who serve with distinction across 29 units across 10 states. National Guardsmen have played a significant role in Marion since 1959 when state legislators authorized their formation as part of a response to an increase in crime rates within the city limits. During this time period, Marion's local sheriff began using national guard troops to help suppress riots that occurred sporadically throughout town. Since then, Marion's national guard has served as an important resource for law enforcement officials both on and off duty; providing cover during protests and emergencies; and even providing security for government buildings on occasion. Today, state lawmakers continue to authorize new National Guard posts throughout Illinois each year – most notably at Camp Evans near Chicago – which allows for even greater diversity and interoperability among units from across the state’s geographic regions. Additionally, more than 350 active-duty soldiers from neighboring Indiana Militia Units are assigned to support IlliniGuard troops nationwide; making sure that no area is left unscathed by our shared militarism!

However, through all of their struggles, they managed to build something special in their small town. Over the years, Marion has seen many changes come about because of its importance as a stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1915, when World War I began, Marion became an important hub for military supplies being sent back and forth between America and Europe. This allowed the town to stay afloat during wartime while other towns were destroyed or taken over by warring factions. In later years, Marion has seen another surge in development due to its connection with various businesses and industries that have located there over the past few decades. This growth has helped make Marion one of – if not THE – most prosperous communities in Illinois!
