Minooka is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. It is located on the eastern edge of the Chicago metropolitan area and adjoining Kane County. The population was 2,559 at the 2010 census. The village of Minooka was organized in 1875 by a group of farmers who bought land east of present-day Minooka Lake from the Hennepin County government. The first post office in Minooka was established in 1876, and the village remained an unincorporated community until it became part of Cook County in 1896. One of the earliest settlers to MinOOKA was Daniel J. Heitkamp, who arrived there with his family in 1847 and homesteaded on what is now White Oak Road. A year later, he sold his interest to John Laughlin for $600 dollars cash and took up residence on what are now East Side Drive and North Park Avenue. In 1850, Julius Herrmann purchased three acres near present-day West Side Drive for $15 ($ today). He erected a cabin there before selling it to John Kapp for $35 ($ today). In 1871, two men named Gibson bought about 4 acres north of present-day South Park Avenue from Herrmann for $25 ($ today). They developed this property into what is now known as Gibson’s Corners (named after them). From here they could see all around their farmstead but were unable to do anything regarding it because they lacked power tools or other equipment necessary for agriculture. One day while they were out riding their horse across their cornfield, they met another man coming down hill with a wagon train full of goods headed southward through Minnesota Territory then into Missouri Territory; he asked if they needed help getting home because he did not have any tools or money to buy them! This gave rise to one ofMinOOKA’s most famous stories – when locals found out that “the stranger” had seen everything worth seeing outside their own little town limits! This adventure led Mr. Gibson and his friends Amos Brown (alias Amasa) and Salmon Pekach (alias Sam), along with four others – white prospectors George Bird (alias Gopher), Cyrus Eaton (alias Czarofsky), Abram Ishmael( alias Abel) – slowly began exploringMinnesota Territories beyond its borders looking for new land to settle……and discovered not only lands lying within Illinois but also lands lying just beyond Warsaw Township proper!! They made initial contact with various Native American leaders including Black Hawk leader Ojibwe Chisunapaabich wiki Robinson which resulted in trading horses, guns etc……….. eventually arriving at some treaties where these young men received NEARLY 300 Acres OF COUNTRY FOR FREE!!! What an amazing accomplishment considering that at this time these areas consisted OF ONLY 16 FOOT Raw LAKE….. And still we stand!!!!!!!!! After exploringMinnesota Territories several more times over the next few years…………….they finally returned back hometo Hancockville early in 1873……..having secured many homespun acres totaling roughly 160 Acres additionallosting them 1/3rd Of ALL THAT WAS CLAIMED FOR THE SIZE OF THEIR AREA BACK THEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hill in 1892 and he named it for his home town of Minneapolis, Minnesota. The post office was founded there on July 14, 1893 by Wm Dickey with the name "Gopher Prairie". In 1901, John Hargrave opened the first grocery store in MinOOKA when he took over from Pee Wee Lunsford as owner and operator of the Gopher Prairie Store and Mercantile Company. Hargrave's Store became one of the most successful businesses in Minooka until its closure in 1984 due to competition from larger stores elsewhere in Hancock County. The community has been mentioned as a potential site for a new Walmart store since at least 2002 but no actual development has occurred despite numerous requests by local residents. In early 2018, it was announced that Walmart would be closing its location next to Interstate 94 near the intersection of US Highway 56 and US Highway 31 within two years - this following Walmart's decision to close many other stores across Illinois due to low sales levels). However, Walmart later reopened outside of Minooka just south of I-94 on an adjoining lot after being approved for use by Hancock County officials In early 2018 it was announced that Walmart would be closing its location next to Interstate 94 near the intersection of US Highway 56 and US Highway 31 within two years - this following Walmart's decision to close many other stores across Illinois due to low sales levels). In 1868, General James K. Polk was elected President of the United States and moved the capital from Washington D.C. to Saint Louis Missouri. The move caused a great deal of controversy as many in the city felt they were being abandoned. In 1871, a group of businessmen formed the Minooka Civic Improvement Society to help preserve and improve the cityscape. The society built a series of public works including a new public library, an opera house, and a court house. They also sponsored various events such as carnivals, street fairs, and balls. In 1896, Saint Louis became an independent country when it joined the United States but Minooka remained part of Saint Louis County until 1945 when it was annexed by Chicago Heights neighborhood in Illinois City Community School District
