The United States Air Force has a long and rich history of gifts to the community in Mokena, Illinois. The USAF's first gift was a Curtiss JN-4B Jenny biplane that served as the airfield auxiliary plane at Champaign-Urbana Airport from 1935 to 1951. In 1948, the USAF donated an hangar and associated buildings for use by the Mokena Municipal Airport. The airport was renamed Wright-Patterson AFB in honor of General Curtis E. Wright, USAF Commander in Chief during World War II. In 1957, the USAF gifted an aircraft carrier named CVN-73 Enterprise to be used as part of President Eisenhower's " Crusade for Peace." The Enterprise sailed into service on October 15th and served as Naval Ship Destroyer Squadron 7 until her decommissioning on December 1st, 1992. She was mothballed at Orange County Harbor until she was reactivated on November 20th 1997 and serves as flagship for Strike Fighter Squadron (VF) 113 flying F/A-18 Hornets from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni Japan. On July 14th, 1990,the USAF gifted two McDonnell Douglas MD-11H jetliners to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). These were called KC-135 Stratotankers and were used by IPUC for research purposes before being retired in 1996. One KC-135 Stratotanker is currently displayed at UIUC's McCook Library while the other is stored at Norton AFB in California. On May 21st, 1984,the USAF gifted two Boeing 747s to UIUC with plans for them to serve as Aircraft Maintenance Hangars (AMHs). These planes are now displayed at UIUC's Hennepin Hall Library along with more than 100 Boeing 737s which have been donated by various entities including Airlines MacEwan Airlines Limited Partnership Northwest Lufthansa AG Frankfurt Germany KLM Royal Dutch Shell plc Singapore Airlines Corporation All Nippon Airways Co., Ltd Emirates Pte Ltd Thai Airways International Co., Ltd Etihad Airways Limited Qatar Airways Company
