Mokena, Illinois is a small town in Ogle County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. Mokena is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is located on the southern shore of the Fox River and has a humid continental climate (Köppen: Dfa), typical of much of central Illinois. The city's ZIP code is 62401. Mokena was founded in 1879 by Danish immigrants as an agricultural village near Rock Island, Illinois. The name "Mokena" means "place where there are tall trees." In 1893, when Mokena became a city, it adopted its current name which comes from the Ojibwe word meanin "white man" or "maiden," since most of Mokena's early settlers were white men seeking access to land that had been purchased by Native Americans for their cattle grazing and farming purposes. The first post office in Mokena was established in 1883 and remained open until 1959; it was moved to Rock Island then back to Makena after that town's merger into Ogle County. In 1907, construction began on what would become one of downtown Mokena's most iconic landmarks: The Arches Towers Building housing the first telephone exchange in Ogle County. That building still stands today and houses many local businesses including Sears Roebuck & Co.'s original branch store which opened its doors in 1916 across from what would later be known as City Hall Square; also on this square were two other First National Bank branches before they merged into Wells Fargo six years later. Downtown business continued growing throughout the Depression era with such giants as J S Giannini’s numerous restaurants opening up along State Street between Third Avenue and Washington Boulevard during this time period while small mom-and-pop shops closed up shop all over rural Ogle County due to hard economic times brought about by World War II shortages within America itself! In 1951 When Interstate 70 was built bypassing downtown Makena & connecting I-drive with Chicago via Decatur Road (& Ulysses S Grant Freeway), Downtown experienced significant revitalization culminating with a major renovation project spearheaded by Mayor John Hagerty which included new streetscape features such as high speed ramps leading directly to Village Green Shopping Center off I-drive (the only mall west of Chicago at that time) while also adding several large buildings including Staley’s Furniture Store around corner from HQers furniture department & newly renovated Park Plaza Hotel - now home to various cultural events year round both inside & outside! mkenacitygov@gmail.com

Mokena is an unincorporated community in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It lies on the east bank of the Des Plaines River, about west-southwest of Chicago and south of Mokena Township. The community was founded in 1879 by German immigrants and was named for the town of Menomonie, Wisconsin. The first settler in Mokena was Johann Vogt who arrived there in 1879. He built a log cabin on the current site of the village. A post office was established at Mokena in 1880, and remained in operation until 1915. In 1902, a group of farmers from nearby Mount Prospect formed a cooperative to grow corn, wheat and other crops on their farmlands adjacent to Mokena Village. The village became self-sufficient and began to attract residents from surrounding villages such as North Elgin, Wheaton and Mount Prospect. By 1910, it had a population of 150 people. During World War I (1914–18), Mokena served as an airfield for the American Expeditionary Forces during their battle against trench warfare in France. The village also played host to evacuees following the war's end. In 1922–24, Mokena experienced its first tornado outbreak when two EF2 tornadoes struck thecommunity; both were destroyed by local authorities within minutes of each other. The early 20th century saw significant growth at Makena with several new businesses being opened including one store that operated for thirty years before closing down due to changes in consumer behavior; another business which manufactured radios took over from this store after it burned down; another grocery store that lasted into the 1960s; and finally a service station which opened up near Center Street which continues to operate today as one of downtown’s oldest businesses still open using traditional methods like hand pump gas sales! In 1937 Lake Michigan provided power for what would become known as "the little city." This made possible many new construction projects such as schools (Makena High Schoolopened its doors on October 1st 1907), churches (St Andrew’s Episcopal Church & First Baptist Churchboth opening their doors on November 6th 1913)and even a movie theater! film had never been seen here before but progress continued nonetheless! In 1951 there was much discussion around newly formed suburban municipalities being established throughout Cook County by then Executive Director Harold Saunders pursuant to his “New Towns Program” however no action ever came from this program or any subsequent expansions theretoat least not until 1958 when plans emerged for what would become known as - 'Makenna'. On July 5th 1958 trustees voted 3-0 within two hours juried members present approving annexation agreements between neighboring villages Cottage Grove (to be located just north east sideof Route 64) Westmont(to be located just southwest sideof I-55) & Menomonee Falls(to be located just southeast sideof IA-12). With this action annexation agreements were ratified with menomonee falls becoming part of 'Makenna' while Cottage Grove chose not to annex because they felt they did not have enough land
