Navy gift history in Morton, Illinois began with the USS Pueblo (CA-46) on May 10, 1944. The ship was a small cruiser that served in the Pacific theater during World War II. The Pueblo was decommissioned on October 25, 1946 and donated to the Morton Naval Shipyard for conversion into a naval air station. On February 9, 1948, the first navy jet aircraft arrived at Norton Air Force Base from Mundelein AFB in Illinois. At that time, Norton AFB also served as the home of Naval Air Station Midway Island. On July 1, 1949, Naval Air Station Midway Island became operational when it received its first Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter aircraft. In 1963, NAS Midway Island transitioned to the Boeing 707 passenger plane and later became an international cargo airport serving both US forces and their allies around the world. NAS Midway Island is now closed to military use and is used primarily as a research center by Purdue University’s Aviation Research Laboratory. In 1978, Navy Base Belleville opened in Belleville Township after being purchased by the Navy from local farmers who had been leasing it from Tribune Broadcasting Company. Navy Base Belleville is now home to Headquarters United States Northern Command (USSNORTHERNCOM) as well as numerous other civilian agencies including Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren (NSWC Dahlgren), US Coast Guard Cutter Squadron Five Three One Two (USCG-5th THREE ONE TWO), US Army Garrison Fort Wayne (USAG FORT WAYNE), and many others.

The community was founded by Isaac Morton in 1828 and became a thriving agricultural center during the 1830s. Morton's Panic of 1837 caused many businesses to shutter and lead to a decline in population. However, the town rebounded during the 1840s and 1850s thanks to its irrigation system and its location on the railroad network. By 1860, Morton had grown to become one of Illinois' larger towns with a population of over 10,000 residents. The town experienced another boom period during the 1860s- 1870s due to new immigration and development around it. However, by 1880 Morton had shrunk back to its original size due to increased competition from other rural communities in neighboring states. However, when the Great Chicago Fire destroyed most of Morton in 1886 it lost much of its importance as an agricultural center once again. Today, however, there is still some agriculture activity taking place within sight of downtown Morton."
