It was founded in 1837 by John Morton and other pioneers who settled in what is now the city of Chicago. Morton's rich history goes back to 1837 when American Revolutionary War veteran John Morton founded the settlement of Morton Grove on his farmstead near today's Highwood Avenue and State Street. The village grew slowly until it became an incorporated town in 1907. The name "Morton" was chosen because it represented one hundred acres (40 hectares) of land that John Morton donated to the village as part of a plan to attract settlers to Cook County during its time as a single-member township. The first store opened in 1909 and by 1912 there were six businesses operating in town: two hotels, four grocery stores, two dry goods stores, one clothing store and one bakery/canned goods business. Post office services were also provided until 1951 when they were transferred to Park Ridge. Growth continued through World War II with the opening of three factories; all but one closed within a few years due to wartime production restrictions. Morton takes its name from Isaac Morton, who founded the town in 1841.
