The history of the Northlake Naval Shipyard can be traced back to 1876 when the first naval shipyard was established in Illinois. It would not be until 1912 that the first ship, USS Constitution, was launched from the shipyard. The navy had been looking for a new facility to build ships since World War 1 and it soon became apparent that Northlake would be able to meet those expectations. One of the most important aspects of building a warship is finding a right partner and Northlake quickly became one of America's leading builders of warships. The navy continued to relies on Northlake for its vessels through both world wars and into the 21st century. Today, Northlake is home to several powerful Navy vessels including USS Abraham Lincoln (D-III), USS Enterprise (CVN 71) and USS Donald Cook (DDG 72).

Northlake, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,598 at the 2010 census. Northlake is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is bordered by Skokie to the west, Westmont to the north, Berwyn to the east and its municipal boundaries are Lake Michigan to the south and east and Cicero Township to the northwest. The first permanent settler in what would become Northlake was John Hargrave in 1836. He built a cabin on a bluff overlooking Clear Lake. The town was organized on February 14, 1846 by order of Governor James K. Polk as "Northlake". At first it consisted of just three houses: Hargrave's cabin on Clear Lake, Edward Fenton's home near Cicero Road and Marcus Wadsworth's farm southeast of town along State Route 56. In 1865–66 when Chicago became an city Limits district with new limits expanding into western Cook County beyond Cook Avenue boundary (northwest of current day Northlake), Northlake proper emerged as one of its wards which included portions of Elk Grove Village and Lombard Park neighborhoods then within Chicago limits but now outside her boundaries due south from I-90 junction (northwest corner of present day South Side). In 1870 when that ward was abolished due to population growth within city limits (and so Elmhurst Township also came into being) Northlake entered into annexation with Lombard Park through fraud by village trustees who claimed they had annexed because their property lay between Cook Avenue & State Route 56 – thus preventing any other development taking place within their wards’ borders without consent or notification from either party involved; this saga ended only after several high-profile legal challenges that demonstrated there could be no such thing as secret annexations without prior mutual consent among two much larger municipalities! Today most residents continue down anglicized names such as "NorthLake", "SouthLake", or simply "Village". Streets named for prominent local citizens still exist today like President Boulevard/Michigan Avenue/Wadsworth Boulevard etc., while others have been renamed more recently like Stevenson Drive/Stevenson Place etc…. Today there are few if any businesses located here anymore except for some tourist traps inside old factory sites abandoned long ago by companies looking for lower environmental costs elsewhere
The first white settlement in the area was on a small island in the Illinois River. The first post office was established at Northlake in 1871. In 1907, Northlake became a city.
