Northlake, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 14,878 at the 2010 census. Northlake is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is bordered by Park Ridge to the east and south, Maywood to the west and north, and Skokie to the northwest. The first permanent settler in what would become Northlake was Jacob Harker in 1836. He named his land "Northlake" after his home county of England. In 1839, another early settler named John Soderlund purchased land in what would become Northlake from Jacob Harker. In 1853,abetween two brothers—Edgar Cavanagh and John Wills—northwest of where Northake now stands began development as Summit City. Edgar Cavanagh built a gristmill on the current site of State Street in Summit City while John Wills built a tollhouse on that same spot about three years later. Northlake became an incorporated village on December 8, 1905 when it amalgamated with neighboring Park Ridge and Maywood villages into one municipal unit called "Park Ridge-Maywood". On July 15th of that year (1907), Northlake annexed its southern neighbor (Skokie) making it one municipality with a total population of 2700 residents including those living within its borders as well as people residing within both municipalities which had merged into one entity since 1905; this annexation created additional business districts which were still active into the 21st century such as Southpark Center Mall located just outside of town limits along I-55/I-90 junction just east of Lombard Road between Skokie Boulevard and Grand Avenue). On February 1st 1976 voters approved annexing neighbouring Lombard Township which also became part of city Limits; prior to this date there was onlylimited interaction between these municipalities due to their separate jurisdictional boundaries resulting primarily from straight line street designations made by platting engineers during construction phases dating back to before World War II following Army Field Manuals which at that time designated Soldier's Row (broad avenue running northeasterly from downtown Chicago Cemetery exit off Michigan Avenue through Rush Street Extension past Elmhurst Hospital across Cicero Avenue then easterly along Burt Road through Lombard Township ending at Highway 10 near Joliette) as eastern boundary for all three municipalities forming city Limits thereby creating Lambert Park Golf Course located immediately adjacent to Interstate 90/I-55 junction just northwest of downtownChicago) . Northlake first became a town on November 10, 1836 when it was organized as a part of the Town of Westmont. On February 14, 1848, the town was made an incorporated village and on May 12, 1850 it became a city with a population of 362.
Northlake was founded in 1836 by John W. North and his wife, Eliza A. North. The town became a prosperous community thanks to its location on the Illinois River, its natural resources, and its access to railroad transportation. The area's growth continued until the early part of the 20th century when World War I caused a decline in trade and industry. Some residents began to move away during this time and Northlake shrank back into obscurity. However, since the late 1990s, there has been a resurgence in development around the town with new businesses opening up and more people moving into the area.
