Orland Park is a city in the United States. The population was 113,846 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Illinois and one of the most populous cities in North America. Orland Park is adjacent to Chicago on the north, Lake Michigan on the east, and Joliet Township on its south. The city's name comes from Orland Park, Ill., a small village located near what is now Orland Park Township. The first Europeans to visit Orland Park were French explorers led by Pierre Charles L'Enfant who mapped out much of what is now Illinois in 1785–87 while exploring the Great Lakes region for France. In 1815, during his Administration as Governor of Illinois under Ulysses S. Grant, L'Enfant founded orchards and gardens at what are now Open Air Market Place and Midway Boulevard in present-day Ormand park before moving them to their current site southwest of Chicago along Jackson Boulevard in 1821. He named it after then-President James K. Polk's birthplace of Vandalia, Ohio (now Cincinnati). L'Enfant also designed or built many important civic features such as City Hall; State Capitol; Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library; International Trade Mart; Museum of Science and Industry (now Willis Tower); High School (now Stritch School) and other buildings associated with early 20th century Chicagoans such as Mayor Richard Mowat and Treasurer George Ewing. In 1864 when L'Enfant donated land for Soldier Settlement No.-4 outside present-day downtown Chicago which became home to many African Americans after emancipation thereafter – he also named it "Orlando." In 1865 when American forces burned down part of Paris during the American Civil War due to an incorrect belief that Napoleon Bonaparte had ordered it done – they invaded France via Orleans County - General John Custer called upon local residents including those living near Paris’s largest fortifications at Fort Dearborn Heights to clear away all trees within three miles (5 km) radius thereof so that construction could begin on a new military installation known as Camp Randall which would eventually become Camp Douglas inside present-day Jacksonville Landing Naval Station - this cleared land for development surrounding today’s first shopping center/mall complex: Promenade des Anglais Shopping Center/First National Bank Plaza across Northwest Side Road from Navy Pier dating back to 1915 before being renamed King’s Mall following World War II - currently containing over 200 stores anchored by Sears, Macy’s/Kohl’s Department Stores as well as JCPenney & Co.. The Orlands were farmers and early settlers in the area. In 1868, they built the first school in Orland Park. The town continued to grow and develop until it had a population of over 10,000 by 1900. During World War I, Orland Park served as an airfield for the United States Air Force. After World War II, the community began to decline and its population fell below 5,000 by 1970. However, starting in the 1990s, growth has resumed with new development taking place in Orland Park including a new high school and hospital.
