Riverdale was founded in 1871 by George Hennepin and Jesse James. The name "Riverdale" comes from the Comiskey River which flows through the town. The first store in Riverdale was built on State Street in 1871 by George Hennepin and Jesse James. The store became known as the “Hennepin’s Hotel” because it served as a stop on their journey to sell goods to farmers across Illinois. In 1915, John Fenton opened a grocery store in Riverdale that became known as Fenton’s Market. In 1923, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) began buying shares of local businesses for $5 per share to provide transportation for residents and employees of the city's major employers. This provided an opportunity for locals who had property within CTA boundaries but did not have business inside ofChicago to start businesses near their homes or workplaces. Among these new entrepreneurs was Harry Jaffe who started his own baking company called Jaffe's Bakery in 1925 on South First Street near what is now Wilson Park Cemetery. In 1935, Rufus Boone purchased land adjoining Interstate 90 adjacent to present-day North Avenue and Wellesley Road for use as a shopping center with restaurants, retail stores and office space planned for its development along I-90 corridors leading southward into downtown Chicago until those plans were scrapped due to World War II shortages of resources in both cities; instead, Boone developed much of what is now Riverdale into an open-air mall including several large department stores such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Macy's Inc., Jaffe's Bakery and Wrigley Field according to contemporary descriptions published during that time period…. Today most if not all original buildings within riverdale are gone save one remaining structure - Harry Jaffe's bakery which still stands today adjacent to Interstate 90

The town grew rapidly after it was established, and by 1860 it had over 1,500 residents. It became an important transportation hub during the late 19th century because of its location at the junction of several wagon roads. In 1907, Riverdale was incorporated as a city, and its population continued to grow until World War II when it fell to around 500 residents. However, although Riverdale experienced some decline during the postwar period, it has since regained some of its former stature as a vibrant community with strong cultural attractions.
