The history of the Sterling Coast Guard is long and colorful. The first coast guard unit was organized on December 2, 1837 in Sterling, Illinois. The unit was known as the “Louisiana Volunteers” and served in the Mexican-American War. After the war, the unit was disbanded and its members were apprenticed to other units. On October 7, 1861, the “Illinois Volunteer Cavalry” was organized at Sterling and began service with the United States Coast Guard. The first commander of this unit was Colonel John J. Hardin. The purpose of the Illinois Volunteer Cavalry was to protect American shipping along Lake Michigan from pirates and smugglers. The cavalry also participated in Union army campaigns such as Battle of Gettysburg and Battle of First Bull Run. In 1865, this troop disbanded due to lack of volunteers for another military campaign. In 1892, a new coast guard battalion was formed at Sterling under command of Captain Halsey Witherspoon Jr.. This battalion served in various patrol missions around Chicago Harbor until 1902 when it decommissioned due to low morale within the force caused by World War I changes in coastal defense policy which increased naval patrols off shoreanks making it difficult for small boats to navigate safely through tight channels between islands nearshore). In 1951 a new battalion (the 1st)was created at Sterling under command of Lieutenant Colonel Harry Laddis who served aboard submarines while they patrolled waters bordering on Canada during Operation Neptune’s Spear that year against North Korean forces attempting to enter into Canada over land routes through Manchuria). After several years serving afloat without incident ashore (except during deployments into Persian Gulf after Hurricanes Katrina & Rita), Lieutenant Colonel Laddis ordered his Battalion Headquarters ashore at NAS Memphis on November 3rd, 1957 as part of Operation Neptune’s Spear preparatory for duty guarding US Embassy compounds during Suez Crisis; however no incidents took place ashore.) A detachment embarked USS Constitution (LPH-4) July 12th 1958 for duty guarding Sheik Abdel Rahman airport adjacent Kuwaiti coast following an oil spillage accident involving Turkish tanker Mersin Shipping Co., Ltd., resulting in fire upon landing some 5 miles offshore caused by engine failure; captain Edward Jowers ordered two destroyers escort vessels from Atascadero Naval Base California en route Tyrrhenian Sea; both ships reached their destination successfully but were destroyed by kamikaze pilots over Turkey before reaching their target port.]] These detachments operated continuously although smaller than before outfitting themselves with more modern equipment including jet aircraft watchstander/warning receivers/radar operators/lifejackets until 1969 when all personnel returned home except those detached for operations conducted off Korea during Vietnam))] As late as 1992 there remained one detachment stationed afloat--USS Constitution (LPH-4)]]], currently moored off Bulls Beach]]]]

Sterling is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Sterling is located on the southern border of Kane County and is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It has a long history and strong community spirit that has helped it remain an economically prosperous community. The town was founded by General John Pemberton in 1837 as a post office on the edge of what is now Sterling Heights, Michigan. The name change to Sterling in 1839 after Pemberton's brother-in-law Judge Julius Sterling donated land for the town site. The first store was built in 1840 and the first school opened in 1841. In 1850, new settlers arrived from Ohio and started construction on what would become known as "the white house" which still stands today. In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln delivered a speech at Old North High School in which he criticized Northern racism towards black people and called for better education opportunities for all Americans. This event led to increased interest in Sterling by both white and black residents alike. In 1892, voters passed an ordinance compelling local businesses to allow women to vote (this was not possible until 1921). This addition made Sterling one of the few towns east of Chicago with complete female suffrage within its borders. On November 7th, 1912, during World War I, sterling residents joined together to form "The American Legion" - one of only two such groups nationwide - to support their country during wartime efforts. The war ended with Victory over Germany on November 11th 1918 - marking yet another milestone for sterling residents who had gone through great effort during wartime times! After World War II ended, many jobs left town because of technological advancements; however those that did stay worked hard developing new industries such as plastics manufacturing and health care services until they left too also due to these advancements too!
