The Navy's presence in Sterling began with Commodore John Rodgers who founded a naval store here in 1822. He donated land to the navy for its new base and also provided supplies and personnel for the navy. In 1862, Commodore David Dixon donated $10,000 to build a wharf and dockage on the riverbank which became known as Commodore Dixon Landing. The navy continued to grow in popularity after it moved its headquarters from Mobile, Alabama, to Sterling in 1892. It would become one of America's largest maritime organizations with more than 150 ships stationed here at various times during World War II including 11 submarines! Today, the navy is headquartered back at Commodore Dixon Landing where it continues to play an important role in our community.

Sterling, Illinois is a small town in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,872 at the 2010 census. Sterling is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Rockford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village of Sterling was founded in 1841 by John A. Sterling and his wifeMary Jane Goodyear as an agricultural community on the east side of Sangamon River near what is now Rockford. It grew slowly until it became a full municipality in 1907. Sterling was named after George Washington's home country of Virginia and its founder, James K. Polk Sr., because he had been born there and owned land in that state when it was organized as a Territory in 1787. ThePolk family donated land to the Village for development; however, efforts to establish schools and other public services were slow due to lack of funding from outside sources until 1917 when voters approved a referendum establishing Sterling as an independent city with its own police department and fire department; incorporation followed two years later. Sterling has experienced changes over time including waves of migration from rural areas around Sangamon County to downtown during the late 1800s and early 1900s for jobs in manufacturing or service industries such as transportation; dramatic population growth following World War II which brought new residents into town; and gentrification throughout the 1990sdriven by economic opportunities within nearby Cook County suburbs

Sterling, Illinois is a small town located in the central portion of the state of Illinois. The population was 792 at the 2010 census. Sterling is one of four townships in Rock Island County and is bordered by the city of Rock Island to the north and east, Decatur to the south, and Ottawa to the west. The first settler in what is now Sterling was Hemanus Willard who arrived on July 5, 1814. On October 12, 1815, he married Sarah Jane French and they started a family. In 1817-18, John Richardson came to this area from Warren County and established a gristmill here on November 3rd. On January 4th, 1819 when Indian Wars were breaking out between Native Americans and United States troops near present day Quincy, IL John Richardson enlisted with General Winfield Scott's army as an artilleryman. He was given his rank of corporal but his unit did not see action because it withdrew before reaching Quincy. Richardson later became a farmer in Sterling Township where he resided until his death on October 30th 1902. In 1865, three men from Vernon Township (northwest corner of Sterling township) founded Sterling Savings Bank which still operates today as one of central Illinois' most notable institutions providing financial services to residents throughout its service area including Sterling Township itself as well as neighboring townships such as Vernon ( northwest corner), Algonquin (southwest corner), Addison (northeast corner), Harper Woods (eastern border) and Moreland Heights (western border). In 1900-1901 James Jahn made a trip downriver from Stonington VT with plans to establish an iron works along the Ohio River at this location but these plans never got off the ground due to competition from other capitalists looking for new sources of revenue during that time period known as "the great depression". Sterling has been home to some famous residents over the years such as former UPI newsboy extraordinaire Julius Rosenwald who moved here when he was just sixteen; local author Margery Allyn who wrote her influential book "The Ironwood Boys" while living here; film producer Harry Cohn whose movie "The Great Gatsby" was shot partially or entirely in this town; director Michael Cimino who filmed most of his movies in this community; Republican Presidential Candidate George W Bush also spent two weekends at camp ground outside town during 1992 presidential election campaign; current Mayor Don Hobbs served through Obama's first term leaving office after being elected mayor pro tempore immediately following Trump's inauguration
Sterling is in Illinois, and it's a town of about 25,000 people. It was founded in 1838 by General James K. Polk as a stop on the Underground Railroad. The area now called Sterling was first settled by Germans and then Swedes. In 1848, the legislature designated the town for American Indians, and it was renamed "Sterling" in honor of the Indian chief who had given the name to the area.
