The Streator Coast Guard Museum has a rich history dating back to 1922. The museum is dedicated to the memory of Coast Guard personnel who have served in the town since that time. In addition to exhibits on the history of the Coast Guard, the museum also offers programs and events related to maritime safety and security.
Streator, Illinois is a small town located in Macon County, Illinois. The population was 1,719 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Davenport-Macon-Dubuque Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white person to live in Streator was Levi Holland on July 4, 1814. He and his family came from Vermont. The first post office was established in 1838, and the first store was opened in 1840 by David Hogg. In 1848, a school was built; it served as the primary school until 1955 when Chauncey High School opened and took over the role of Streator's public school. In 1911, a Masonic Lodge No. 2 met at an unknown location to form a lodge hall which they used until 1969 when it burned down; the building still stands today as part of Forest Park Cemetery outside of town limits while its name has been changed several times (e.g., to First National Bank Building). In 1917, four out of five residents voted to allow incorporation into Macon County after years of petitioning by citizens who desired such an action; however due to lack of funding from county officials (due largely to World War I), incorporation did not take place until 1920 when it became one of twenty-four towns in Macon County made up primarily of rural agricultural districts with no representation in either house of the county legislature. The only resident politician from that time period was Fenton Dalrymple who served as mayor for two terms from 1921 through 1925 before leaving politics altogether to become manager for Lumberjacks Coal mine near Dexter Lake where he spent most his days during this time also serving as president pro tempore and vice president for senate during 1926 thru 1930; he also chaired committees on education and finance etc.. In 1951, when all but one township had achieved full local government status within Macon County following passage by both houses of the county legislature thereof proclaimingMacon County an open carry community pursuant thereto since then all municipalities except Township One had ceased operations although some continued hosts occasional special events or held referenda therein usually dealing with various issues & concerns pertaining thereto like liquor prohibition etc.; including Township One which reverted back to village status following confirmation by state supreme court that under present law Village could not be dissolved without prior approval thru legislation & referendum proceedings duly instituted therein thereby notwithstanding lack thereof since 1902 therefore finally becoming legal again albeit renamed Streator Village effective January 1st aforesaid having previously been known as "Streator Township" Today much like 1912 Streator is predominately an agricultural community consisting mostlyof corn cribsand soybean fieldsalthough there are scattered residences scattered throughoutthecommunityincludingan historic hotel now usedasaprovincialfarmhouse&a few stores aroundthetown center & main square

The town of Streator, Illinois was founded in 1834 by Hagerstown residents. The town became a major center of agricultural production and commerce after the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825. In the early 1840s, Streator lost its importance as a commercial center due tothe arrival of the railroad. However, it regained its prominence as an agricultural center during the Civil War because of its strategic location on the east bank of the river that served as a supply line for Confederate forces. The town continued to thrive throughout the 20th century thanks to its strong economic base and population growth. Today, Streator is an important cultural and historical center in central Illinois.
In 1851, the first settler in Streator, Illinois, was James A. Fenton. The town was platted in 1853 and named for General George Washington Streator, who had served as a colonel in the U.S. Army during the Mexican-American War. In 1871, the town had a population of fifty-six people. By 1910, it had grown to one thousand people and became an important agricultural center due to its location on the Chenango River. In 1914, Streator became a city and it has since grown into a thriving community with over two hundred residents.
